Based on this conversation, I'd rather play MrF than Smeat. I'd much rather play an opponent that takes his turns quickly instead of making me wait 4 minutes (in which you can do much more than you can in tabletop) and then try and get upset about my warning him that we are going to play by the rules.

If I'm having a chat with someone during their turn, then I won't timeout. If I remind someone "You have a minute left", then that's courtesy to let them know that we are playing by the rules.

I played tabletop blood bowl a few times againt a guy who would over think every frickin move, it took him 10 minutes or more to get one turn done! despite this he still lost pretty much every game. Not that stuff like that happens here on fumbbl, but I hate when people go over 4 minutes, and i hate it even more when people who are new to the game dont just say they're new, and they shouldask for help every now and again instead of not asking for help.

To me, 4 minutes almost seems too long, so timing some sucker jabrony out after 4 minutes is fine with me.

I don't like it when I'm down and people keep fouling me every turn, but you know what, the rules allow it, and i might think you're a jerk with an IQ below a chimpanzee, but you're not breaking any rules if you do it.

So keep on fouling if you want to, you big fat stupid jerk.

I just experienced an unwritten rule that I have never come across before. Over 1300 games prior and I never knew that I had to fall all over myself apologizing for hurting and removing stunty players from the pitch.

Ok, this thread has now run its course.

Now it is time to properly respond to this thread.

What in the HELL ARE THE UNWRITTEN RULES?

1)Turn 16 fouls, bad?

2)Not standing up with your last 2 guys, facing 11 guys, to offer up those last 4 SPP to CAS?

3)Surfing Super Stars and Legends when you have the game won?

4)Cherry Picking new coaches with your uber min/maxed Legendary CPOMB player in the Box?

5)Playing freaking skaven with 2OTS score gutters?

You guys can start filling in 6+

6) Being a silent opponent who takes 4 minute turns.

I think an unwritten rule should be obvious but it requires self awareness - if you play really slow, preface the game with that - that way your opponents expectations for gameflow can be anticipated and nobody gets butthurt about being timed out or turns going to 3:59 every turn.

mrt1212: you are missing the point.

Unwritten rules litter all professional sports world wide..They are rules that are not against the rules but are considered not sporting.

Like

Lets say in Baseball calling for a suicide squeeze up 9 runs in the 8th inning. Boxers will be reduced to bikini thongs in rage over that action.

Not illegal but very much not sporting.

There are at least 50 of these types of unwritten rules on FUMBBL that occasionally come up in the forums.

7) Never accepting a match, not clearly in your favor.
Cool Waiting until the 3rd minute to begin your turn, whether passive-aggressive or porn-surfing.
9) Using the admin client.
10) Accusing your opponent of using the admin client.
11) Playing on a 300 baud modem.

I think within the confines of Box and more generally Fumbbl, there are no unwritten rules about sportsmanship resulting from in game actions. I used to think much more about this about 200 games ago - why are some people such jerks playing a board game with other people who they depend on to want to play games with them? But things got better on the whole and I've seen a lot less spiteful coaching. In the end the only things you really can give a hoot about are your opponent not wasting your time even if you think the way they play is bananas. Most coaches should have the ability to divine the difference between wasting your time in concrete measurable ways and emotional ways.

Most of them come about because of people thinking that their way of playing is the "right" way of playing.

The problem is that people come in here from playing in very different ways in different leagues.

A lot of the time I would just rather not play than play some neutered game in case the other coach will burst into tears.

If it's important enough to be a "rule" then it should be a written (and enforced) rule.

Laughing But then how will people get indignant over ambiguity in the rules?

@koadah, I think for most of us, we are being silly here.

You are absolutely correct that rules should be written.

But, we are talking about "sportsmanship-type" of rules. Not really rules, but what each of us strives for in our own "in-game code of conduct."
