Splendiforous Sylvans 1, Wir Wunschen Ihr Blut 1

The WIL Fringe competition was jumpstarted as Naboimp's elf band took on Emrys' vampires in the first match of the Shetland Division. The Sylvans won the toss and elected to receive. The Sylvans quickly moved the ball to the left sideline in a loose cage, but Wir Wunschen countered, knocking down a lineelf to position a vampire next to the ballcarrier. The Sylvan's Catcher, Andela Dorilia received some assists to knock the vampire down, but a bit overenthusiastic, she tripped trying to break through the thralls behind him. The vampire used the distraction to get back up and level the ballcarrier while the thralls tightened the noose around the elven team.

Since she had broken behind the lines when she fell, Andela decided to break open for a pass. Another lineelf moved to help her out while the rest scrambled for the ball. Unfortunately, the Sylvans appeared nervous and jittery in their first match and kept tripping in their dodge attempts. Between the tripping and the hits of Wir Wunschen, inevitably, a thrall came up with the ball and ran toward the endzone. Breaking free at last, several Sylvans gave chase, but they were too late to stop the touchdown. With only a turn remaining to score, the Sylvans were unable to get an equalizer before the half.

Wir Wunschen received the second half kickoff with a chance to put the game mostly out of reach. They quickly formed a cage with the thralls while the vampires went ahead to inflict damage. The Sylvans reacted by ganging up on one of the vampires, knocking him out of the game. Shortly, thereafter, the remaining vampire could not contain his thirst for blood and left the pitch as well.

It was about this time that the Sylvans decided to not be quite so tentative on defense. They started placing tackle zones on the thralls. "They're not orcs or beastmen after all," Sylvan lineelf Jerolus remarked after the game. Indeed, the Sylvans got the better of the ensuing skirmish as many thralls went to the turf, some of whom even left the game. When it became clear that the diminishing numbers of thralls would not be able to protect the ball much longer, the ballcarrier heaved the ball over the elfs' heads deep into their own end.

As Sylvan Thrower Gladius Winflow raced back to collect the ball with a lineelf accompanying him, the rest of the team worked to make sure the thralls were staying on the ground. Gladius picked up the ball, recognizing that time was beginning to run short. He heaved the ball just across midfield to where Sylvan Blitzer Forcerren Garderrus was standing over a thrall he had stunned the prior turn. Forcerren caught the ball and dashed for the opposite endzone. While several thralls managed to give chase, Forcerren slipped beyond their reach and scored the tying touchdown.

With so little time left in the match, the game devolved into a skirmish around the line of scrimmage. There was a scary moment for one lineelf who looked like a goner, but the apothecary was in fine form, saving the poor lineelf from certain death. He should even be able to play in the next match. As the whistle sounded, Naboimp and Emrys exchanged good wishes while their players exchanged angry glances.

ETA - Competing match reports! Smile No major discrepancies, but I had forgotten that the first vampire to leave was due to a pow/skull.

My first game of the Fringe has been played, with the Cold Blooded Blood Drinkers facing off against Tesifontes mean Ogres.

Kicking in the first half, the Ogres eagerly tried to beat the poor Thralls into the ground, however, a particularly uncivilized Ogre mistook the Thrall Dom Perignon for some kind of drousy Beer and Niggled himself on a nice Double Skull in the first turn.

While the Thralls valiantly tried to not be killed by the ogres (they only got Badly hurt in most cases) Our most imaginative Vamps managed to Knock down the Goblin Ball Carrier. Only to witness how the Ball ended up in the hands of an Ogre. Not to be slighted, they took down the Ogre too, grabbed the ball, made a dash for the endzone, where Gilbert the Gourmet was unfortunatly brought down by 3 Goblins.

Receiving in the second half, the Vampires made a quick run for it, confused the Ogres and scored.
However, due to having about 6 players left, we were unable to prevent the Ogres from euqalizing.
Luckily, an OTT attempt while the Vamps received again (failed first action on my turn, due to some nasty perfect defense stuff) failed.
Kudos to my Vamps for failing exactly 2 OFAB rolls in the whole game.

I noticed that the teams in the Anglesey Division didn't get scored for their draw match. I assume that should happen automatically since the Guernsey Division match that just finished is already scored.

Good spot Naboimp.

I've fixed that league now and manually added the scores.

Good to see more than 1/2 the games have been played so far, keep it up!

Cold Blooded Blood Drinker vs. Truculant Truckers of Tamworth.
The Cold Blooded Blood Drinkers now faced against some other Vampires.
Things started up decisvly unwell, since the evil Truckers received and promtply got the Ref.
Much Booting ensued (with our own Dom Perignon beeing send of by the nasty ref for a foul that did not even do anything!), leading to many Valiant Cold blood Thralls ending up in the KO pitch.
However, the Ball Pick up thrall of the Truckers got so exited that he failed to pick up several times.
his Boss Vamp was pissed, pickued the ball up, Got Blitzed by good Old Gilbert the Glutton and knocked down, with the Ball going to Gilberts assist.
Score for the Cold bloods while kicking against GTR!
Unfortunatly, another Vamp got Knocked out by some really uncivilized Trucker Thralls and ended up in the KO box. With only 7 players, it still looked as if the Cold bloods could defend as they knocked the ball loose and brought 2 Vamps near it.However the following happened: 2Die block, Both Down, reroll pushes.
1. Vamp near the ball get OFAB, dodges a lot (has to move away from ball), get to a thrall, bites him.
2. Vamp near from ball gets OFAB, also dodges a lot, bites the same.
3. Trucker thrall near the ball wonders where the Vamps have gone, picks it up and scores a touchdown.

Some nailbaiting defense work and some rain prevented the Truckers from scoring again, leading to a hard fought 1:1.

Receving a niggle and an RIP, the Cold Bloods arent exactly in the best shape, however we hope that Tesifontes Ogres kill a Vampire or 2 of the Nexus Dark Knights.

On hindsight, killing all 5 would be even cooler.

Cheers,

After a close match their first time around, the Sylvans looked forward to their next game against the goblins of Wacky Little Daffodils. As they took the field, they noted that famed star Nobbla had joined the goblins for the game.

Perhaps anxious to get things going, the Sylvans started the game on a blitz, but there was early evidence that things would not go their way today when Catcher Andela Dorilia tripped trying to angle past a goblin on her way to the ball. With the threat to the ball abated, the goblins turned to their usual plan of advance, namely knocking down the opposition. With the trolls unleashed and Nobbla making havoc with the chainsaw, the Sylvans were falling left and right, but most of them kept getting up.

The goblins were not having much luck advancing the ball, and eventually the Sylvans were able to pop it loose. The goblins recovered, but were driven back. A follow up hit knocked the goblin, the elf and the ball all to the ground.

The Sylvans appeared to have the advantage. By concentrating on knocking down Nobbla, that threat was neutralized, and over the course of the half, the trolls had become somewhat isolated and confused. But although the Sylvans had a clear path to the ball and a reasonably clear field ahead for the score, there was just too far to go and not enough time to get there. In frustration, a lineelf tried to at least knock down a goblin, but only succeeded in knocking himself over with it as the half ended.

As the second half kicked off, the Sylvans were beginning to lose numbers, but they bravely looked to figure out how to score. The kick was deep, and as Thrower Gladius Winflow went back to retrieve it with the cover of a few lineelfs, Blitzer Forcerren Garderrus led another group of lineelfs in an assault on the goblin's left wing. As hoped, the goblins and trolls swarmed to meet Forcerren's group, leaving the Sylvans' left flank mostly empty. Gladius directed his formation around to that way, and to save some time tossed the ball ahead to Levinlest.

The goblins closed quickly, leaving only a narrow path along the sideline for the Sylvans to break through. An attempt to at least knock over the end goblin failed, and Levinlest was advised to make a run for it. He tried! Breaking to the outside, he lengthened his stride to put more distance between himself and the following goblins, but his attention faltered. He tripped, and apparently landed on his head, giving himself a serious concussion (on a reroll).

Given the thinning ranks of Sylvans, this was basically the game. With numbers and momentum, not to mention Nobbla's chainsaw, the goblins systematically knocked anyone moving to the turf. Retrieving the ball and running it to the goalline was a simple matter. The goblin ballcarrier camped out to watch the mayhem as the goblins thrashed the poor brave Sylvans unfortunate enough to remain on the field in the full sight of the ref who had taken a bribe to swallow his whistle for the half.

By game end, only four Sylvans remained on the field, and they had done so as much by dodging and running as anything else. As time ticked down, and the Sylvans finally converged on the ball, the goblin took the score to win the game.

Despite the bruising, the Sylvans were just glad there were no fatalities or niggling injuries. Voluvia and Levinlest would miss the next game, but they would be back despite Voluvia's concerns about her increasingly brittle body. Needing at least some bodies for the final match of the division round, the Sylvans hired a new Thrower Jorenna Aruliayn to share duties with Gladius.

Looks like we lost a team from the Anglesey division. The Nexus Death Knights have been retired. I can see they had a rough match against the ogres (and from the comments, it may have gotten a bit testy between the coaches), but the team still had four vampires and seven healthy thralls and 50K available. Retirement of the team seems quite extreme a reaction in this situation, especially when there was only one more scheduled match.

Sad

Ah, and there was me thinking things were going far better than expected. I had anticipated having to chase people up at this stage but all the round 1 games are played and about 1/2 the round 2 ones and we are not even past round 1 yet.

I've subbed Hofmeister into replace the retired team, monk is welcome to join in the cup with a new team of FF7+. Vamps are quite a tricky team to use so take some getting used to.

I had hoped to kick off a 4th league on Saturday as we just needed 1 more new coach to have 4 people. Still if we get 2 new joiners i can start another league off.

Well i think i should take this chance to say a big thank you to everyone in the league for being so efficient at playing games. Just 1 thing though, the leagues are deliberatly short so if you do get a bit beaten up then there aren't too many more games to play in that league or cup.

I'd really like to avoid concessions or retirements where possible, once a league has finished you can easily retire the team and start again. Also part of playing in a league is facing stronger teams and surviving to rebuild and crush them in a revenge grudge match. My own WIL team has a list of teams and coaches we owe a good thrashing due to previous games.

If you dont fill the 4th place then give me a nudge on Sunday. I should be around and I'd be happy to make a new goblin team for the fringe, dont want to take places from new people who want in though Smile

Just to clairify, I'm sure everyone knows this already but there are a few dim people out there (SillySod).

By new coaches i mean those not already in the WIL, the 3 coaches we have are already in the main league. I won't start a Fringe 4 team league without at least 2 new coaches.

I've sent you a PM Archevol, bloodelf has already submitted his team. So if you join then I can kick off another 4 team league this weekend.

The main WIL has seals for each season a team plays in so i thought we'd copy that, Lambert came up with a much cooler one than my rather dull effort I just removed the white border.

Image

Any team playing in the Fringe can add the seal above, just copy and paste the code below
Code:

<img src=http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c157/spubbbba/WILfringe-1.gif>

I'll try and make some trophies so that the winner of each league can display that in their team bio too.
