if you are using win10 run a traceroute to fumbbl.com (78.66.212.182) and see if there is a ping spike along the route. Further down the line the more its a carrier problem, if it happens on the first hop or two is your ISP.

Instructions:
https://kb.intermedia.net/article/682

Also

run a continuous ping to fumbbl.com for about 10 min and see what % of packet loss you have

ping -t 78.66.212.182

hit <ctrl> C to end the ping - should give you packet loss stats as well as avg ping

reply here with general info - such as hop# where spike occurred, packet loss % maybe can help ID the problem

Where in the world are you? I've suffered horrendous lag from the West coast of the US from time to time. Sometimes it's cured by the (frankly laughable) solution of activating a free Tunnelbear VPN account and changing to a Finnish end point.

Hey thanks for the reply! I am on the east coast of Canada. In Montreal.

@Amon242 I ran four traces. The first was for less than 30 hops. the second was for 10 minutes as directed. I then repeated the procedure to try and confirm the intitial results.

There is a lag spike in both of the first two hops as you can see below in trace 1. In trace 2 I had a lot of "request timed out".

reboot your modem(i know) and check all your cabling - looking for crimps, cuts, nicks, loose cables

run a ping and traceroute on a large domestic site(CNN) and a local news site, if you get the same results(high packet loss/ping spike in the first couple hops) call your ISP and indicate you have high packet loss

I had the same symptoms and it was a shorted cable out at the box

Welp I did BOTH reset the modem and replaced the old crimped Ethernet cable between my modem and router at the same time. Check out these results!!!

I owe you some beer! Are you coming to Amorical in Ottawa?

Many thanks! I'll try a trace again later to confirm but these results are pretty promising!!

nice - I'm not but I'll just have an extra beer tonight and call it even Smile

You would be surprised at how often defective cabling causes issues.

If it flairs up again then most likely its the modem. If its a Hitron modem there is a bug in certain firmware version so you will have to contact your ISP and ensure it has the latest firmware

Cheers, I"ll do the same.

It says "arris" on it. You've taught me how to run a trace route so I"ll keep an eye on it.
