Wanted: Advice on halflings
My box halfling team Low and Mighty Blow are a lot of fun to play, but so far I have had to play each game with 11 players, since several were missing and I didn't have the money to go above 11 regular players (and hence figured, it would be okay to play with JM for two or three games).

Now, with only nine players left, one of them missing the next game, but 170k in the bank, I wonder what to do.

Shall I simply buy 5 flings to have 13 players in the next match and 14 players in total? Or do less players do okay and it's advisable to keep the TV as low as possible and develop the trees a bit further first? (In that case I'd buy 3 flings now to get back to 11 +1.)

Opinions please, especially from the experienced halfling coaches out there! :-)

Cheers

Rabe

you need 14 flings asap. but flings! drop rr if you want to trim your Tv.

Hmm, I see that 5 might be a little too much... What is a fair amount? Three or better four of them?
Posted by luckyjim12 on 2013-07-12 15:10:33
Fewer RRs, 16 flings as soon as possible. Then even if they don't get squashed you can foul with them.

i usually find that fresh halfling is best cooked simply - - just fillet, and then fry quickly in some butter, then drizzle a little lemon on the plate and voila! magnifique!

Flings definitely wernt made for box/TV matchmaking, they strive off of inducements. God luck brotha.

Enter them into a black box brawl. That way you can play up some TV and get a chef and/or deeproot.

Oh and they should play my [R] high elves. =D
Posted by Rabe on 2013-07-12 15:40:09
16 flings? I know, one or two will probably be missing all the time, but I still want the free spot for Deeproot (if I have a chance to get the inducement money), no?

Playing in a BBB is an idea, though I can't commit that much with them right now. And about meeting High and Mighty Blow: We would have to meet in the FUMBBL Cup, I guess. I do fear that the Monsters (and their fans) will lynch me if I pass the Cup to the flings though...

Maybe you should try to take away some blocks? You average nearly 35-37 blocks against in your 4 matches. This is mainly the reason why you miss some flings now.
Posted by Cavetroll on 2013-07-12 16:24:10
I've only ever played halflings in League, so I was curious how often you face an opponent in the Box that is 100k+ TV above you? I would think being able to induce the chef every game would be critical.

As for Deeproot, in Ranked/League where you have some ability to predict your next opponent I see the reason for keeping 1 roster spot open to induce him. But in Blackbox I'm not sure it's worth it. I understand wanting to, though.
Posted by maneetti on 2013-07-12 16:54:23
I would spend all the money to buy the roster full.
Big cheap reserve is only thing that makes flings able to fight back.
Posted by C3I2 on 2013-07-12 17:32:30
Some teams just dont work in box. Any team you want to "play up" for example. Instead of getting halfling chef, or bribe for goblins you actually have to BUY them all the time.

High rerolls can be good early but you have to know when to let go of them (ie- In first few games once you have filled the bench). A reroll is two flings dammit!

You also need a full bench. If you are going to save a spot for Deeproot then fairy snuff but build to 15. Just retire and replace any rookie MNGs you can afford too, that keeps your team full to capacity once you build over 11.

The last piece of advice is dodge like crazy as long as there's no Tackle/Diving Tackle! Stunty + Dodge = Only a 1 in 9 chance of turnover, and if you don't dodge out the guy you are stood next too is going to punch your fling off the pitch anyway. Pick one. :- )

Just today I got 180k of inducement money with my human team, but such differences are very rare.

I'll follow your advice and hire as many flings as possible. After that (if there ever is a short period of "after getting a full roster") any money saved can be useful for inducing the chief if necessary for some reason (probably in a tournament only - or against some really nasty team I'd love to hurt and/or humiliate :-D).

Thanks to all of you! Especially for the advice on dodging away to limit blocks. I'm pretty sure I did so because when not playing against block/tackle heavy teams, it sometimes seems sensible to mark guys in crucial positions. The easier it gets for my opponent to hurt the flings, the faster I'll dodge away. ;-) But overcommitting when man-marking is a general problem of mine, probably the mindset of a dwarf player kicking in. :-D

Medium rare with some garlicbutter! :D
Posted by Nightbird on 2013-07-13 06:32:31
full roster at all times. drop a rr.
Posted by Topper on 2013-07-13 18:25:19
Flings really need as many players as possible.
My team have 4 RRs which is perfect - I find that giving the Trees Guard protect your flings - and helps them block the opposition. This also protects your team - don´t be afraid to foul - a fling sent off is a good switch for an opposing player - especially if he only has 11 players. Just ensure you have 11 for the start of the 2nd half.
Fire all players who doesn´t get a trait (double skill roll) or stat increase. (I´m aware you have none so far).

Flings aren´t really built for the Box - but they can do honorable especially at low TW. Already here at 1270 (my team) there´s too much tackle and/or mb/guard etc.

... it sometimes seems sensible to mark guys in crucial positions.

Do this by marking the space/area they need to gain, 1 Blitz per turn = less ground given up ;) oh dear, I am giving advice now, must be tooo long since I played enough games :D

Take care Dal

I'm a fool for Fling man marking, its a dangerous game to play against all teams really, even none bashers.

The better thing to do is mark areas you need to control as described above. Flings in the way where they cannot be blitzed/blocked is better. My only time to throw in and man mark is when the balls down and I'm marking it, but debatably its not a winning strategy in the long run as you'll slowly run out of guys to mark with.

I agree about the above Fouling attitude with Flings too- even a 50K Lino fouled off is good bargain compared to your 30K meat parcels, just remember not to foul when you are outnumbered and aim for the more valuable knackers if you can! ;- )
Posted by Rabe on 2013-07-14 10:22:03
I shall try to do less marking and more blocking the way next time I play them. Let's see if I can reduce the number of blocks thrown against me. :-)
