it's quite a good game of its genre, yes

Posted by Cavetroll on 2014-12-20 08:02:22
It's fun but frustrating at times, not unlike Blood Bowl. Some combinations (race/modifier) are totally broken.

What Cave troll said.
Had plenty of fun with it. Underworld is also fun but I've only played it once.

I think it's alright.

It's greatest strength is that it's a game that seems to suck in both ends of the spectrum. I (preference: heavy Eurogamer, like to think, don't mind 4 hours of grind) will play it, and so will some other (preference: silly card games where you turn over cards until there is a winner and have no direct impact on proceedings yourself) people I know.

It suffers if you play it too often (the iOS app has killed it a bit for me), but if you keep to the board game, I reckon you'll see value from it. I suppose it depends on if it has competition and what you're buying it for. If it's a Christmas present, you could do far worse. :)

@pythrr- what genre would you put it in? Catan type game?

@cavetroll: so you're saying, that if jump to the forums of said game, there will be cpomb equivilent type posts?

@badoek- what I said to cavetroll.

@goo: so good enough game to suck you in and search for another way to play when you don't have the people to play it with? I like the sound of that. And yes, indeed I would be looking to cater to both sides of the spectrum, with me looking for a game to play that has some finer points, and the other side being my nephews for ease of play, the gf landing somewhere in the middle.

Thank you all for responses, thinking of going back to pick it up tomorrow. It was on the same shelf as Catan and caught my eye, to the other side was another game that also looks interesting: Ticket to Ride. Any comments to this would also be welcome on open ears.

I loved that game.

Ticket to ride is not bad either. On a scale of 1-6, smallworld is 6, ticket to ride is 4. (Rating of 3 would also be playable in that metric.)

@bghandras- I do think Smallworld is the game I would prefer, but at the same time I think Ticket to Ride would be an easier sell to the fam, especially since my Brother-n-Law is a transport engineer.

@cavetroll- PS please no spoilers on what's OP, the mega ect. I'd like to figure it out myself. Not saying you were gonna say, I'm just saying.

I've it and I like it. Playable at 2, interesting with more ppl. Not much luck involved.

Good game, well designed. Probably rate it good to very good. Though some combos can and are broken it is fun.

Yes huff, what you said. :)

I prefer TTR, and it's an easier sell to kids, I think, but SW will be fine too.

Not for me, really really random.
Posted by Sharkrudi on 2014-12-20 11:36:13
it's a very good game for me. a lot of extension very interesting.
Posted by mister__joshua on 2014-12-20 11:50:33
Combos of race and abilities are random so people can't select broken ones all the time, they'll just come up every now and then.

I enjoy both TTR and Small worlds. Think small worlds is quicker to play.

Both Smallworld and Ticket to Ride and worth playing. In Smallworld there is more conflict between players. In TtR conflict is mostly indirect.

yeah. It's in the gateway drug category for me, just one step up from Catan.

I can just about convince non-gamers to play it.

I really like it, still people have to get used to it. Some of my friends love it, others don't like it that much. One interesting concept of this game is that every race even the most successful has to end. You've got to decide when it's time to leave a race and pick a new one. Don't stick too long to a race!

I have 3 different copies of Ticket to Ride and play it with my kids all the time, they love it, and so do I tbh, for info the kids are 10 and 11 so it isnt that challenging tbf.

They also have Smallworld and enjoy that, I prefer Smallworld personally.

In Catan trade matters a lot, in SW not at all. While SW is a Eurogame (in the sense of the BGG explanation) it is about direct conflict almost right from the start. You conquer a region and take it from another player. That's not everybody's (every family's) taste. TTR is both easier to learn and faster to play. And if you want to play with non-gamers imo both TTR and Catan are better suited than SW. Taht said the game is still not that complex and fun.
