Ogre Painting Blog – 2019 NAF GT part 4 complete!
After dozens of evening and weekend hours spent over the start of 2019, the ogre team is finally complete. I had the idea for this team many years ago when the plastic dragon ogres came out, but kept procrastinating over the snotlings. I’d wanted to make them all different and unique, which would have either involved spending a fortune to get more classic 2nd edition models or converting them.

Thankfully the Black Scorpion range recommended by Wozzaa were a good match for the 3 GW 2nd editions snotlings I had and that saved me lots of money or many hours of converting.

The last 3 snotlings to complete were all classic 2nd edition models that I’d had for years. These sculpts are fun and characterful, plus very quick to paint due to their small size.

I didn’t feel the need to convert them, though did have to paint the player number on one of their boots as he had no armour.

That was all the normal players, which meant it was time to move on to the staff and stars.

I’d initially bought the cheerleader intending to use her as the basis for a Big Bertha conversion. The model really wasn’t a favourite of mine and instead I decided to use the maneater even though it would need more work.

Since I had the model I thought I might as well add her to the team to complete them. She was painted in team colours and I had fun painting the squig a deep red.

Since her face was so big I gave her blue eyes as well. Eyes on human sized models are always tricky to get right, tiny changes in how they are painted can really alter the look of a model’s face. Adding a coloured iris makes this tougher to get right, but I really like how it turns out when you have more space to work with.

Brick was a model I had made a long time ago. Part of the reason I chose ogres was that I wanted to do 2 of the crp star that were most associated with the team.

He was a pretty extensive conversion using parts from the metal BB ogres, 40k Ogryns, lots of greenstuff and various bits from other models. Having modelled some of the normal ogres as a blocker, blitzer and catcher it was even more important that Brick stood out as a Star Ogre thrower. Whilst painting the model I made sure to add a bit more decoration and colour to him. A greater portion of his armour and clothing had black, white and red parts of it, in particular white or red borders.

His skin took a long time to paint and I was really pleased with how his left hand turned out. Of course I then proceeded to drop the model and all 4 fingers broke off. A good hour was spent trying to locate all these on a thick speckled carpet under my desk. I only found the last finger by using gaffer tape on random bits of the carpet. I was able to glue these back on and repair them, but that combined with spending more time on details, plus having to paint the goblin he was holding meant this model took almost 2 weeks to complete.

Grotty was a simple conversion using 5th edition thrown goblin with a head swap from a 40K Grot.

As he was the only goblin on the team he didn’t need to be painted that differently from the other members of the team. He had so little armour that there wasn’t really enough space to add red borders to it.

Bertha was another star I’d converted a while back and had been sitting on my shelf ready to paint.

She was already different enough from the rest of the Ogres being smaller and the only female player. I did give her a red and white part to her glove to draw attention to it since that is part of her name.

The fur lining round her neck was painted brown to add a little variety to the colour scheme as well. Although tempted by other hair colours blonde worked best with skin tone she had.

The last thing to complete was the bases of the models and the display base.

I wanted the team to play on a blasted wasteland style pitch with a few hardy plants and patches of snow. I used a mixture of Agrellan Badland and Earth to give the impression of bare, cracked earth. This was then painted dryad bark before being drybrushed with mid brown and then bone.

As in previous years I cut the NAF logo out of platicard and stuck that to the middle of the base. It’s always hard to chop this card up and keep the logo from looking good, so this year I was lazy and just put Grotty in the centre. On reflexion it might have been better to paint the logo to resemble a different type of stone, grey or maybe sandstone. However by the time I thought of this I had already painted it and time was running out.

To finish things off I painted a few pitch markings on the base, as I was adding snow dark brown was used in place of the usual white. Then patches of static grass and snow were glued to the bases. I tried to ensure the patches on the models would match the display base. To help this I painted the player numbers or names in the gaps they should be in.

With this team done I have now painted 23 of the 24 teams and all but 7 of the stars from the crp book.

I’m hoping to have some time to work on these stars over the summer and maybe finally get a chance to paint the models I need to finish the painting article I have written for the NAF site.

Am giving serious consideration to doing a vampire team next as not only is that the last team I still have to do but they also have 2 stars on the list (Helmut and Crazy Igor).

Amazing, really like the yellow colour on the armour. A real labour of love.
