Custom Ruleset Project: Warhammer 40k
I shall then become... a blogger.

Good day everyone. As Squiglet is already doing and blogging about, some months ago I also started using this fantastic tool we have in fumbbl.com to create custom roosters from the universe of 40k. You can see Squiglet's work on Necromunda roosters here.

I'm afraid he's much more organized and his blog entries will rock much more, but I'm posting this anyway since I need to know some opinions and discuss about the rules and roosters I'm building. I'll share with you a couple of roosters per entry to comment them. (Although If you're anxious to see the other roosters I can tell you my ruleset is num 260).

Even though there are some parallel projects which also developed 40k roosters: BB40K Home and this one I wanted to create my own, and try to balance it and make it playable.

I've tried to build this ruleset in a way that it's compatible with the present BB rules, this means in theory you could make a crossover of fantasy BB and 40k. For that reason only I kept the treasury and buying scale to 10k, which seems so awesome to spend and gain but so absurd in rule terms.

I've made few changes to the basic rules, the more important being the increase of the starting treasury to 1100000, so marines and other teams are possible.

My approach to building the roosters has been mostly the codex of the team and background of the 40k universe, sometimes I think I follow too much the codexes and that lowers the playability of them. I've also tried to establish a connection to codex stats to BB stats, Strenght-Strenght, Initiative-Agility, Resistance+armor-Armor Value. For Movement allowance I just try to keep things balanced.

I used my own system of pricing, based on SPP won skills but thanks again to Squiglet I discovered this pricing system and this one.

Without further delay, I give you...

(ok, I NEVER tried to do anything this complicated as a bbcode table. I hope there's an editing button in the blog entries.[edit:found it!] I think I'll use images from now on)

I think of the various marine teams more or less like the rules in their different chapters. I expect the marine roosters to be more or less the same players, each one with a characteristic special rule and some special positionals.

The justification for this team is the following:

In the 40k universe, BloodBowl is played everywhere, even as part of Astartes training or entertainment. Mostly, neophytes are the ones who play, but from time to time they convince some Marines to join the team. (I honestly started with a 0-8 or even 0-16 quantity of marines but it would be quite unplayable). The skills useful in combat are not always useful in the pitch so Neophytes train themselves to pass, catch the ball etc.

The astartes improvements have not yet kicked in the Neophytes, but all astartes (or future astartes) have Thick skull and normal access to strenght skills to represent their improved bodies.

Space Marines have power armor and enchanced biology that make them slightly slow, MA=5 but strong (mighty!) and tough while retaining agility.

Since they're the "standard" team I kept the Thrower and the Catcher simple. I actually wanted to give the signature chapter skill (stand firm in this case) to the whole team, but this resulted in overpricing. The Stand Firm choice was due to the "shall know no fear" nature, although I'm open to suggestions for the signature skills for each chapter. So far Blood Angels have juggernaut (and a red thirst surprise), White scars fend and Grey Knights hypnotic gaze, lacking better psy rules.

That's all for now. I look forward to sharing impressions about this project and discuss the roosters.

Making the positionals non-Astartes is probably a good call, even though I think they are a bit too many (you could field a roster with no linemen with this). I'll probably fiddle with my rosters to see if they can fit the fluff a bit better.

I also think the re-rolls should be 50k, to show the superior organization of the Ultras compared to the other chapters.

The thrower is clearly a librarian and he should start with HMP. :)

We'll have to test it to see it but my intention was to field a lot of astartes.

I haven't thought of or found a rationale to justify the re-roll cost that convinces me. I just Wanted to make it hard to marines to start a league with too many positionals.

Mr_Foulscumm, I think some characters like librarians would just own the game if they were in the field. That's what the wizard is for isn't it? Also, in terms of background I can't imagine a reason why a Chaplain, Librarian, Eldar Seer, would play BB. I'm sure they have better things to do. But then again, so do undead and Necrons and they play.
