Did I miss the memo that the spoiler warning deadline has been set to zero? Watched it yesterday, and the only chance for not knowing in advance would have been to avoid the internet completely. :-P Strange to be wondering whether any of this will be in the books at all...
Posted by BillBrasky on 2016-05-25 09:02:12
I doubt it.

I talked to a friend of George in March.

He said George was a bit butt-hurt by HBO & he's going a way different direction.

He said someone that HBO killed off will have a major part in the next book.
Posted by jarvis_pants on 2016-05-25 09:32:03
Verminardo yes that is the way of the world. Literely dont go near the internet if spoilers effect you.
Posted by mister__joshua on 2016-05-25 10:17:30
I watched it the day it was aired and even by then the wife told me people had been crying all over Facebook about it. So I was expecting something to happen.
Posted by WingedHuman on 2016-05-25 11:08:01
The North remembers.

In Other News, Brienne's Eye rolling per episode is at an all time high, and so is Tormund's blood pressure when in the presence of Brienne.

Is pod jealous?
Posted by ArrestedDevelopment on 2016-05-25 13:49:30
Bill nobody cares about cpombers dy.... oh. Yeah. Sads.
Posted by Verminardo on 2016-05-25 13:51:04
Heh Tormund/Brienne was actually funny, which is more than can be said about Varys/Tyrion this season 'round, sadly.

I sure see how GRRM would be disappointed by what they've done. The last two books lacked momentum, yes, but the way they've introduced it seems arbitrary. It now makes as much, or little, sense as your average super hero movie. In other words, like a proper fanboy, I'll be watching it to the end and I'll be bitching to the end. Then I'll read the books, if ever they come out, and bitch some more. Then I'll defend it to the death as the great series ever to any ignorant fool who claims otherwise. ;-)
Posted by ArrestedDevelopment on 2016-05-25 13:56:22
From about mid-way through season 1 it was obvious the tv series was going to be a separate entity. Thing is, GRRM used to write for TV, he must have known this was likely/going to happen from the start, so I find it hard to muster a lot of sympathy in that regard, even if I can easily recognise where his discomfort would come from.
Posted by Verminardo on 2016-05-25 14:10:37
True, but up to season 4 I loved all the changes they made from the books and could clearly see why they were better for the format, or just better full stop. This started to shift season 5 and it's shifting further in season 6 imho. A lot of it just seems... uninspired.
Posted by ImpactedAnimal on 2016-05-25 14:26:38
Some scenes in the latest episode reminded me of the Mummy film franchise - in my books this is a really bad thing...

Having said this Hold the Door!!!! did move me and bring a tear to my eye and a recent Dany seen did too (tho my mrs said that might have been her nakedness)
Posted by Verminardo on 2016-05-25 14:28:00
"He said someone that HBO killed off will have a major part in the next book."

Er, spoiler warning?

You've been warned!

My guess is he is referring to Doran Martell. Isn't there even a Kickstarter by some wisecrack who wants to redo the Dorne scenes? ;-)
Posted by ArrestedDevelopment on 2016-05-25 14:34:28
Yeah, I agree the series has definitely meandering a bit, and some of the visuals that were once striking are now rather insipid. But I stopped comparing to the books a long time ago, so both are judged on their own merits and failings.

In some ways, the direction(s) the TV series have taken has made it simpler to stomach GRRM's lengthy delays between books (!).
Posted by koadah on 2016-05-25 15:11:58
I didn't think that much of season 5 but I'm liking season 6.
Hopefully they'll wrap it up in season 7. Maybe a long season 7.

Some of the deaths look more like staff downsizing than for actual plot reasons.

It is a pity about the spoilers but GRRM was never going to get book 7 out before the show ended.

Those Stark children. Haven't they grown. ;)
Posted by tmoila on 2016-05-25 16:17:10
"He said someone that HBO killed off will have a major part in the next book."

Either Stannis or Doran, probably latter because he built the Dorne plot arc very differently and definetly far better than HBO.
Posted by Timetis on 2016-05-25 16:22:28
^ Doran seems likely - Stannis was a sinking ship in the books too iirc.

I quite like the pacing of the new episodes - it feels as if like they are setting up for the show to end in the next season - which is not a bad thing imo.

I read on one of the you tube channels I go to for GoT news that there are talks going on that they are planning on 2 more seasons. Season #6 will finish out what is going on in the North. Season #7 will be focused on the return of the dragon queen and setting it all up for the season #8 smack down of titanic proportions for the fate of the land between the walkers and Dany/Stark armies.

Just what I read. Does not mean anything but I would like to see that.
Posted by pythrr on 2016-05-25 17:47:17
GRRM has said that this bit (the whole door thing) is from the Winds of Winter, and he wrote this section for the TV series.

So, there you go.

Watcha talking about, Wylis?
Posted by pythrr on 2016-05-25 17:49:59
8 seasons plus a film is the current plan, according to winteriscoming.net
Posted by Zed on 2016-05-25 18:51:42
Almost didn't watch the season 6 not to spoil the futur books but i would have been spoiled anyway so i did, this must be in the books, shitty writers at HBO couldn't have come up with something like that, had some tears in my eyes at the end but makes perfect sense.

It gives a little bit of hope for the character i was the less interested to follow.
Posted by tuomaa on 2016-05-25 20:15:25
Haven't watched yet the tv series at all, but read the books as they came out.
I think this comic sums up the current situation with cruel accuracy: http://www.cad-comic.com/cad/20160504

You can really see the difference in writing between TV writers and George's. It gone goofy as shoot, in my opinion. It's hard to take it serious right now. Hold The Door, for Hordor? Give me a break. Another annoyance is that the Children of the Forest started the White Walkers. On the books they talk about being an enemy from the start. It's turned into a cartoon. Might as well have Ben Affleck star as the next character. ARRRG! No you've got me started on it. I had it out of my brain since it aired!
Posted by tmoila on 2016-05-25 21:11:54
Ben Affleck cast as Aegon Targaryen the lost Targaryen son posed as Joe Connington who storms the Storm's End (håhåhå got it? stormed the storm's end :DDDDDDDDD)

5/5 would watch
Posted by Zed on 2016-05-25 22:14:22
Keggie i bet you that the Hodor thing is in the book, the pun word is not maybe the greatest part but the set up to his death is quite astoning and gives purpose to Bran who was a pretty weak caracter till now
Posted by Verminardo on 2016-05-25 22:29:39
Yet in the set-up as shown on screen the chances of Bran getting away are 0%. Comic indeed. I was joking earlier that the writer of Wolverine: Origins must have been involved. ;-) Like, hey, ain't GoT that show where popular characters get killed unexpectedly? Fine, let's just stab someone each episode, with no consequence at all to the stabee.

The best scenes of season 6 so far, imho, were both taken directly from the books, to me it was Drogon's appearance and Merryn Trent's.
Posted by keggiemckill on 2016-05-25 23:03:19
I found Brans Character very strong in the books. I enjoyed his part very much. This whole "he touched you now he can enter this magical location" part is ridiculous. All of this is almost as bad as book 4.
Posted by awambawamb on 2016-05-26 09:47:41
to those who fear spoilers: has been documented that a "spoiled" story is more enjoyable and satisfactory: that is because your brain sees surprises and plot twist as logic errors. Think about Star Wars episode III.
Posted by Verminardo on 2016-05-26 10:04:43
I would much rather not think about the so-called Star Wars Episode III, ever again, thank you very much. ;-)
Posted by pythrr on 2016-05-26 17:35:18
agreed, keggie.

the writing in S6 thus far as been a bit rubbish
