And old new league idea, revisited...
Last year (and the one before, and the one before), I queried to see if a long running (20+ game) season format could be turned into a functional league. It garnered some interest, and alot of positive commentary. But, I was forced to concede it couldn't work.

The reason is simple: time. 4 months for a league would just fail. So, given my personal recent interest in playing 5s or 7s, I wondered if combining the two could work? If you can reasonably play 2 games in the time it would normally take for 1, it could drastically shorten a league.

So, again, because I'm interested in this sort of thing... If it were a league using reduced team sizes, and thus faster games, does it change anything at all? Or am I still banging my head on a concrete wall?

I think you are banging. Which is sad.

Sad because you like the idea too, or sad some other way?

I would do this thing.

We'll have (mini-)leagues back in BB7s at some point, and we'll probably change the format from open round robin to round robin. Haven't even though about how long such a league will run, but it should quite a few weeks.

If there's interest for some kind of extra-long league, we'd for sure be able to run it - and find some reward for BB7s coaches sticking to it all the time. :-)

I would like the idea to play in such league in bb7s in general.

Problem with such a long league is that mid wy through most players become disinterested. If they are not challenging for the title they wont care and you will have drop outs.

NBFL takes about 4 months... 14-16 game season with playoffs following. It's been working just peachy. We're just about filled for the upcoming season too!...

(just need one more franchise filled <-- shameless plug :)

Shameless plug appreciated, and graciously denied Jeff :). I did enjoy it, most of the time. But right now, I really am interested in doing the mini-teams.

To Gregory, I know... That is the issue, there just aren't alot of masochists out there like me :D.

To Rabe, I'll keep that in mind sir. Have had some off blog chatting going about. But if that fails, I might just hit you up to see what's doing :D.

One of Christer's suggested benefits is that he might allow League Comissioners to award rewards. If this is teh case it maybe possible to do like the English Premier Leage and make incremental awards based on final league position. Therefore each match has some meaning to the bitter end!

That'd be EXCELLENT...

I've found that most online leagues fail, unless you have dedicated people.

Casual coaches will lose interest, you are correct.

But if you get people who play more than 3 games per week, you will have a solid league.

Nothing is perfect & you will get the occasional real life problem comes up and people drop out or dissapear when you deal with a large group.

I have no problem playing any league with a 20 game season.

I'd suggest either 1 or 2 week rounds. I've played in some leagues with 10 day rounds, and that was really awkward to schedule.
