Pace of Play
I took a good long break from Fumbbl in 2012 due to life being too busy to have time to play. Started again this past December, and my experience has been good overall. One thing that I notice, though, is that people play INSANELY slowly now. I'm not talking about new coaches, I'm talking about people with hundreds of games taking 2.5 minute turns regularly, and often over 3 minutes. It's just utterly silly to me. The rules state 4 minutes for a turn in tabletop, where you have to manually move guys around and roll dice and occasionally consult a chart. With everything automated, it should be 3 minutes as an absolute maximum, and most turns should finish in under 2 minutes unless they're exceedingly complex.

Am I up a tree here? I'm growing tired of playing the open divisions, because I now fear that I'll sit and watch my opponent take 3+ minute turns while I die of boredom.

I'd be one of the slow players for sure, but I'm normally coaching quite badly disadvantaged teams where most turns seem quite difficult for me. Because 4 minutes is the time you're allowed to take I suppose automatically I tend to plan out from the start how I might use all that time.. eg. 1st minute often I will just think before moving anything, 2nd minute start making important rolls, 3rd minute reassess how rolls have gone and if I should proceed with original plan or change tact, 4th minute final reassess of turn and last fluke desperate plays that might be worth trying

What I noticed lately and others have confirmed to me that the server has been very laggy for a while now. Sometimes a couple of seconds pass between clicking on a player and activating... other times the client disconnects entirely... it's not in a good shape.

@wreckage I've noticed that as well, but it seems like when the servers are laggy, it affects both players. I won't gripe to my opponent if I'm facing the same challenge in getting my turn played.

I HAVE been griping to my opponents when their turns take 2.5+ minutes and mine are complete in 45 seconds. Apparently, this is unwelcome.

What did you expect? Them to be happy you are critising the fact they are taking 2 minutes a turn?

Please. Let them think and take their turns without having to read whining.

I would be cautious about having a go at people for playing within the rules :)
I appreciate that the rules may have been made for a different medium but the rules are fair for both sides and I wouldn't have thought result in an imbalanced dynamic. Do you find you can play better by taking more time?

Here's how I view it:

Players are taking about 1 minute longer than I think is reasonable. Over the course of a game, that's around 15 minutes of doing nothing for me.

So I would equate it to popping your favorite Xbox game into the tray and having a 15 minute loading screen before you can play. Injecting 15 minutes of inactivity into a game makes the game substantially less enjoyable.

However, if the community consensus is that this behavior is acceptable, then my behavior must be unacceptable. 9 blog votes may not be a consensus, but it's likely indicative of the community's thoughts on pace of play.

I'll quit griping during matches and in match reports. 'When in Rome...'

@harad

Honestly, I would probably win more if I took longer turns, sure. But my objective is not solely to win matches, it's to enjoy myself and win within the parameters that make the game fun, if I'm able.

I wouldn't trade 5-10% extra win percentage for diminished enjoyment in boring matches. I'm sure my opponents enjoy beating me swiftly in those matches I would have won with more caution, and honestly I enjoy those losses more, too.

I absolutely understand pubstar. But I guess you're coming up against people who split that enjoyment differently. It doesn't make you wrong and it doesn't make them wrong.

I imagine there are some coaches who would like less time to make a faster game and some who would like more game to give them more chance to get things right.

As you identify this is arguably one of those things where there is no right answer and so you find a compromise.

Or alternatively it is one of those things which is in the rules which aren't going to change :)

I hope you can find more people to play with who are more compatible with your play style.
