#6 Lateflowering Magnoliatree – Damaged Back (NI)
Swealtering heat today - both in game and in real life. I'm sure I should be out there enjoying the weather, not stuck in front of the computer, but you know how it is, when you hear the call of FUMBBL, there's not a lot you can do about it.

Anyway, on with the game. burnsy87 is a tough opponent and he's not afraid to stick his elves right into the thick of things, even if that means lining them up in front of the tree. And he had a good collection of skills, too. We both had a single MB tackler (and they were both pretty active all the way through) but burnsy87 also had a couple of guard, which made things really difficult for me.

So as usual, I began with the double pass and a quick score to get things moving. Then the high elves came back with a speedy enough reply, and it was 1-1 after three turns. Which was why, when the following kick went out of bounds, I decided not to give it to the thrower as usual, but to give it to the tree and let him run it all the way down for a score. That was the plan, anyway, but burnsy87 had other ideas and he just kept throwing players against the tree, preventing me moving more than a single square or two. I was doing enough with the rest of the woodies to prevent him getting a good block on the tree, and he had no strip ball, but I was worried about the wrestlers that were dotted around the place. On turn 7 I was forced to blitz into some space, but couldn't get close enough to the high elf endzone to be able to score of turn 8. However, I could break tackle and hand-off to an AG5 catcher who could fairly easily walk it in.

Sadly, that was when the tree decided to take root, and although there was another catcher beside him, that one was in three tackle zones and fumbled the catch.

Still, 1-1 at the half was not too bad. I still had a reasonable number of players (7, I think at that point) and the sweltering heat had passed, so even though the high elves were receiving, there was a good chance I could hang around with enough players to keep the score close.

But as it turned out, I began the second half with a blitz, and managed to get my hands on the ball. There was a brief scuffle, but I recovered for the score, so suddenly it was the high elves who were having to play catch-up. They still had 6 turns, however, and were only a single score down, so it looked likely that they would even the score, and maybe even pull ahead if things went their way.

And things did seem to be going their way when they caused three injuries in a single turn. I had been low on players before that, and now there was no one left to put up any sort of reasonable defence, so the high elves scored.

So now it was all down to whether or not my five players could keep the high elves at bay for long enough to salvage a draw. The only option open to me was to run the ball as far downfield as possible and tie up burns87's tacklers, hoping for a favourable outcome on the inevitable two - or possibly three - dice blitz that would be waiting for my catcher on the following turn. But sadly, it didn't even come to that, as I double-skulled the blitz the would have cleared the high elf tacker out of the way.

So suddenly the ball was sitting there at midfield and there were an awful lot of high elves gathering around it. Only the tree standing beside the ball was preventing them from an easy score. But prevent them he did, with a blitz which allowed my thrower to nip in and throw a long bomb down to a lone catcher way further downfield. It wasn't a guaranteed score, but it would have made things difficult for the high elves, but as it turned out, my usually-reliable thrower messed the pass.

And with neither team in a position to score, that's how the game ended.

It was a fine game, and required a lot of thinking. I was a bit disappointed with the passing stats - I haven't had a game above 50 yards for simply ages now and I'm missing it - and I picked up a niggler on one of the AG5 catchers. However, I've decided to hang on to him for the moment. I doubt he'll last that much longer anyway.

So, another game that I didn't lose. I could get used to this...

...but probably won't get the opportunity.
