They were originally formed as a group of goblins on the simple premise of "acquiring" slaves in one place and then selling them off elsewhere at a profit. Unfortunately, they ran into a slight hitch when it turned out that their bigger, more dangerous slaves were rather harder to sell than expected. Then one goblin came up with the seemingly brilliant idea of shoving them onto the pitch as an impromptu team. With luck they'd make a good profit, but at the very least they'd have a way to dispose of those slaves that just wouldn't sell.

Of course, they'd need to put a few of their own number in to fill out the team, but finding a few "volunteers" was never a problem. Playing on the pitch, after all, was only probable death.
