I'm a fan of GW, played 40k a decent amount, love their fluff. I'd heard of Blood Bowl long ago, thought it sounded interesting, but never got a chance to play it. Outside of the general idea of the game, I know nothing about it.

What's the best way to learn? Obviously I have an account here and understand the mechanics of FUMBBL, but I don't know anything about the underlying game it's designed to support.

So... what would you recommend to a fresh-faced, wide-eyed, utter noob? How do I get into this game?

Thanks in advance!

A few things

1. Personal experience. You gotta play and practice. Do an inventory after each game and think about why what you did either worked or didn't. Play in a rote ways until you understand when to diverge from that rote way of playing. Ask questions about what you could have done better.

2. Second hand experience. Watch coaches in tourneys with impressive records and previous wins in tourneys. As much as this game is about building your team to have tools at your disposal, you can only crudely copy the best teams. But you can pick up ideas on how to use those tools through observation. Ask questions when you have them.

3. Wreckage's 1000 Losses Playbook. Has some good info to get you up and running. See if I can dig out a link for you.

4. Treat it like a game and not a reflection of your person. Bad things happen when it's unlikely, good things happen when it's unlikely. If you can detach emotion from the dice, you're a step ahead in at least enjoying the game, warts and all.

Welcome!

Look up the LRB6 online, that's the current ruleset. Then look over the help section for advice on team design and basic tips to the game. Then make 3 teams: a League team to play against the Faculty of Academy Instructors, a League team to play in the 145 Club, and a Ranked team to get your butt kicked with.

I guess I didn't make it clear in the OP... I have never seen or played a game of Blood Bowl. I don't know any of the rules. I've tried spectating a couple, but it's not exactly obvious what's going on.

Ah, so a complete neophyte. This will take a bit longer to explain

Read the rules! They should be available at gw's website in the specialist games section.

well, in that case - start by reading the "living" rulebook. I dont believe we are allowed to link it here for copyright reasons, but its easy to find on google. After that coming back here and watching some games will make a lot more sense!

Well, welcome! Definitely start with the rules. The current version can be found here: http://www.thenaf.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/CRP1.pdf

Once you've read through the rules under the Help link at the top of the site you will find a new coach quickstart: https://fumbbl.com/help: (it's the big blue link)

Once you have read through the rules, you'll want to create a team (see the quickstart) THEN join the 145 Club: https://fumbbl.com/p/group?group=3180&op=view

This is a super low stress group to learn the rules, and the site. If you need help, feel free to post here.

Welcome!

I learned by playing single-player on the PC (Blood Bowl Chaos Edition), and reading the rules. Once I was comfortable I started playing on here to practice for a 10-man Tabletop league I was in. Now this is my main.

if you're into GW and table top. Find out if there is a local blood bowl league. Wander down to their game night and check it out.

Hi and welcome to FUMBBL! Very Happy

+1 to reading the rules as a good first step (both for the game, AND the FUMBBL site Wink )

Also, +1 to trying out the single-player on the Cyanide version (available on Steam), if you don't mind shelling out a little cash. If you don't want to spend any money then, once you've read the rules, I'd recommend the 145 club and/or spectating some games on here to get a feel for how the game works.

I could spectate a random game with you on here now, if you like, and try to explain roughly how the game works (you'd need to have Java though, so you can download the game client)?

That would be super helpful. I've been spectating games while reading through the rules, but some of it isn't clicking quite yet.

Sending you a PM.

Do you have the stones to lose a lot? The players here are amazing - they take the right amount of chances and have the game down to a science. It is a game that has a steep learning curve with not a lot of wiggle room for new players. Once the game starts leaning one way it can easily tip over and you find yourself with a few players on the pitch and the opponent stalling you with his 11. Not exactly fun for the noobs.

The game really seems to thrive on the counter-stat tactic- Tackle > Dodge, Fend trumps Piling On, Wrestle Takes a Blocker down, etc, etc. So where as one team will match up very well against another... a third team will easily counter them. There are a lot of skills that seem like they would be useful and fun but will just bloat up your TV and make your team less competitive - which is all fine and good if you are having fun!

Start out with Orcs or Humans. Watch, play, lose.. repeat.

The most important concept: a 1 is always a failure, and most failures end you turn right away, which means you lose all the actions that your remaining players could have taken. Once you learn to play safe and maximize your probability to take full turns, you have half of the game figured out.
