Now, onto the games themselves!

We can see very clearly how the results will play out. But, in the effort of explaining to the Otyugh, we will write it all out. One never wants to be eaten.

First, Baldur's Gate will have an easy walk in the Baggers park. I mean, they scored 5 touchdowns in the last match! How can chaos ever hope to match that?

Second, the Lizardssons have just finished digesting a delightful lunch, and will easily roll over the tired Wanderers.

Third, Galaga know a thing or two about Nurgle. And how can any team, even with amazing doctors, ever expect to win without at least four tentacled Str 5 players??

Fourth, Replacement Bus Service is in fact Acción Social. Clearly this means that the Chaos Dwarves literally have already won.

In the semi-finals, the Lizardssons will crunch Baldur's Gate. Boo would never go for the eyes of a skink!

And then the finals. The Lizardssons have no need of public transportation, and will usher the Replacement Bus Service right out of the tournament.

Ah ha! As predicted, the Woodhead Wandered have scraped by against the Lizardssons! Undoubtedly, Chaos Chosen are now into the finals!

We now have nothing but Mutants and Elves still in the tournament. This is clearlynotanindicationofanythingrelatedtoteamperformancewhatsoever.

Baldur's Gate has defeated the Baggers! The semi-finalists on that side are Wood Elf against Wood Elf. Who will prevail? Surely, not the Wood Elves!

*may have been stockpiling enough rocks to ensure that neither team can move on*
*what would happen if the winning team had every single player MNG?*

I thought I'd do a little review of the first round of the final bracket and first 2 games of rd2 now we're really getting underway.

Reviews:

San Jose Baggers (Quinn) vs Bjornhaven Berserkers (DaCoach) This one lived up to expectations exactly in terms of winner and tightness of game, but overdid expectations somewhat on bloodiness - both teams took heavy casualties, and the chaos picked up some mng that no doubt were to prove problematic later. Norse fought valiantly, but losing the toss stopped them ever really getting out ahead.

Coca Loca BBL (mrt1212) vs Baldur's Gate BB (morehouse) Another one that went to expectations, even if many would've picked the larger team - the issue here for mrt1212 was that this one was always going to be a high tempo elfball game, and that his team simply isn't as good at that as the wood elves. A horribly timed set of 1s, some questionable defensive formations, and simply the fact that he was consistently rolling more dice (and higher) dice to score than his opponent backed the HE into a position there was only one outcome from. As is so often in bloodbowl, it wasn't really any one set of dice, nor any one decision, but the slow accumulation of minor sleights.

Lizardssons (Bloodfeast) vs Left my Heart in San Francisco (Zed)
Flings play leezards, flings lose. One of the major issues flings have vs lizards is that even if you steal all their rerolls, saurus can 3d a fling every turn with ease and skinks still can move about semi reliably. Now imagine you don't steal any rerolls, both your trees root t1 and you muff a gfi on the deep kick before having your star removed and leaving the ball open in t2... Yeah, pain dice for the flings and the only thing they got out of this was putting a few lizards in the cas box.

Woodhead Wanderers (Rawlf) vs Fässla 11 (Grandm4ster)
In the end the bashy DE actually got outbashed, the WW worst injury was self-inflicted, and greater mobility and ball threats reduced the DE to eating blocks more often than threatening positionals. Not surprising given then relative experience of the coaches.

Galaga (gary_gygax) vs Slime Punk (stanrichardson)
Yikes. Well before this game I would've predicted the DE winning, but purely because I felt the nurgle weren't really that killy and weren't really fully anti-elf either. Turns out you don't need to be either to wipe an elf team carrying perms. Some very questionable decisions on the part of Slime Punk let Galaga get away with this one, and given the mng on the killer and the occasional mention of "the other nurgle", one wonders how seriously the game was being taken as it progressed... Wink

Harbingers of Anubis (spinball) vs Unfair tea... I mean er, Médecins Sans Frontières (Menonaloco)
The aforemention "other nurgle". Turn up, win game. Wait, pick up a perm too? It's not supposed to work like that! Yes indeed, MsF finally pick up a big perm on a key player at a key stage in a major - one bloater is reduced to ma3 courtesy of a crowd surf. Not only does he miss the next game (vs DE) but he will be reduced to limping after elves for the rest of his career (which could be key later on). The rest of the team got the job done with ease though, and the Harbingers of Anubis weren't so much ushered into the afterlife as unceremoniously dumped out of the tournament. But MsF will remember them!

knownothingbutsnow (lautrehamon) vs replacement bus service (malmir)
Speaking of remembering opponents... the late foul in this one might end up changing quite a few things in this tournament - and it's one I'm not even sure I would've made myself (this means I would not have, it's polite): there was still an outside chance of tieing this one up when the boot was laid, and while there was a presumably satisfying crunch for one coach, all it really did on the field was seal the loss. Otherwise the game went according to form, with big norse not really able to deal with big DE (or spot easy surfs... bit embarrassing for norse). The biggest news is probably that it turns out MsF's bloater won't be the only st5 limping into the next round.

Acción Social (Arturidas) vs CL Winner 2019 (Blueeyes)
Out of all the rd1 games, this was probably the hardest to pick a winner from. On paper, the DE should win it. But a close inspection of the teams (ok, a casual glance) brought up a glaring issue which was highlighted in the previews - this DE team had avoided completely anything with the word "dwarf" in its name since its inception. A coach who seems to prefer softer games. And the way the game played out showed it - near enough all mens LOS when PD or blitz would be catastrophic (and PD happened), questionable decisions, panic, and inexperience all costing big. Some would say the decision to dump all cash in for 2 extra apothecaries signaled a loss before this one even began - handing the cdorfs 2 bribes and raising a flag of fear before a dice was rolled.
And well the cdorfs played on that, brought the bash, and got lucky at times. Word is the DE coach was so traumatised by the whole experience he's made his own CD now...

Rd2

Woodhead Wanderers vs Lizzardssons
A classic lizardmen vs wood elves encounter here - the elves brought enough numbers to weather the storm and had the wardancer to strike fear into the lizard hearts. The lizards, with one saurus out, brought hemlock... and good lord I bet Rawlf never wants to see that little @!#"** again. This one was decided really on an error off of the LOS at 1-0 to the WW, which allowed them to get the position for 2-0 very easily and seal the win. Truth be told the Lizards had been a bit fortunate to get in at h/t 1-0 down, but with the apo gone at that point, a solid start to the half might have been enough to tip things their way - instead the opening turn twisted the knife.
Speaking of twisting the knife, hemlock stabbed his way into ballcarriers so often in this game that he's probably opened the eyes of many into how big a bargain he can be. And Rawlf now has a dilemma over whether he potions a wardancer for the next game...

Baldur's Gate BB vs San Jose_Baggers
Well. There was a plan here, I'll give Quinn that, he knew what it was and he picked the inducements to try it. But I'm pretty sure he'd have rather had his CW and DP present in the ranks over the 2 babes and 2 bribes. Especially when the bribes were almost a non-factor. The initial chaos drive was disturbed a few times but in the end got rolling with cas and pushed over the line in reasonable fashion. However the h/t anti-ottd was a bit of a disaster - the setup was the NAF-favoured 3-4-4, but critically, it's not anywhere near as good vs an ma9 woodelf, or frenzy (which turned out to be no big deal here). In the end morehouse had a relatively trivial ottd which would probably have been harder even just by backlining. The second half following the ottd went as expected - elves went up and down, left and right, picked a side, scored. The Baggers had a look at the ottd, but that's about all they did.

With one more under the hammer...

Acción Social vs Replacement Bus Service

Ouch. RBS went with the same double apoth strategy here, although this time i have zero criticism over it as it handed nothing to Acción Social. The opening turns looked good for the DE, but they were beginning to lose players slowly and the fulcrum turn would actually be their sack of the bull - your erstwhile commentator here felt that leaping onto the ball (and tbh, the follow should have been made imo anyway) just to make a real mess of the situation was worthwhile, but that aside, the resulting scrum led to enough elves leaving and the reroll situation dictating that defence needed abandoned for the remainder of the drive. Up until that point the Cdorfs looked very, very nervous (no blitz t1, no foul t1 etc). And at 8/8 there was a really lucky escape too - the initial defence was terrible, and even with PD a relatively simple ottd was left, but dice failed the DE again.
Second half went a bit more to plan, with a DE score, some surfs, one big injury taken early but mostly KOs thereafter, but rerolls kept going. With OT required, the CD got the toss and the DE t1 ate their last reroll for nothing, left a hole and the CDorfs immediately replied with multiple removals and a procession forwards... A bit of an upset sealed. No perms taken by the CD, no mng, they keep in reasonable shape for whatever they face next, and take a bite out of yet another team in the process.

For anyone interested, last quarter-final match between me and MenonaLoco will be played tonight around midnight server time. My opponent is facing some internet connection issues, so there's also a possibility we will be forced to play next day on a different hour.

And Nurgle have knocked the last Dark Elf out of the tournament. In a Nuffle-driven twist of affairs, the 2 elves (both Wood) play each other in the semi-finals, and the 2 mutants (Nurgle and Chaos Dwarf) play each other.

Mutant vs Elf in the finals. The classic high TV match up.

Medecins Sans Frontiers absolutely tore a path through the Chaos Dwarves facing them, and are ready to go at full strength against the Baldur's Gate wood elves.

A mighty Nurgle monstrosity against the agility of the Elves for the final battle, er, match of the GLT. Go for the eyes Boo! Go for the eyes!

So here we are, the Final is coming!
And what a classic matchup, agile team vs bashers.
Two top coaches in action, 300K of inducements for the woodies.
There's already an idea about the date the match will be played?

Finale Review for those who missed it:

Greetings! This game was snuck through late at night on Saturday for Euro viewers, as our American continent dwelling friends got the game in during a period of downtime on the WoW: Classic servers so Morehouse didn't need to abandon his quest to ascend to level 55 poopsocker in order to play the game.

The match itself featured two extreme high tv teams - Menonaloco favours the j0de approach to teambuilding (just roll +ST on every st4), and couples it with the sort of statrolls on his pestigors that would make PeteW blush; Morehouse on the other hand, favours the tried and tested lrb4-style approach of "get 16 elves, 6 rerolls and who cares what the other guy has", which was previously championed by Pmg, Malthor, and so many others... (although I've had word from Morehouse's publicist, PR department and lawyer that I need to point out he plays a much harder schedule than Malthor or he will sue me for libel).

As to the game: The setup was a prolonged and tense affair as Morehouse won the toss, elected to kick and took about 30s to put out his team. Menonaloco took... much longer. No doubt preparing himself for the Blitz! kick-off that assuredly, his lucker opponent would roll (remember folks, the RNG favours higher CR coaches). After setting some st5 tents warriors on the tree in the middle, the beast south, and pushing his grab and frenzy pestigors to opposite flanks, the nurgle settled their ballcarriers centrally and sat back ready for

BLITZ!

Ruh-roh shaggy, PFFFFT Lammer legend coach with juggs wardancer is for makings of RNG favourite. Except due to a quirk of fate (or some cheetos stuck on his fingers), Morehouse misclicked his blitz and used leap at the beginning instead of move, removing the option to juggernaut off the standfirm beat of nurgle. The wood elf catcher rolled the hard 6 (on reroll) for the catch, but the Nurgle were able to drop the ballcarrier, recover, shore up and contain all the wood elves in their own turn 1.

And that was really it for the next 4 turns - the nurgle failed to land any big casualties aside from a BH on a wardancer (which was instantly apoth'd by the wandering coroner), while meandering up the field with a cage and keeping positional elves back with the tentacles (plenty of rerolls burned attempting cage dives and failing tentacles rolls).

However in turn 5 that approach backfired slightly - the wood elves made a screen between the cage and the rest of the nurgle team, the wardancer finally escaped tentacles and was positioned north of the cage but outside the screen: effectively, a series of choices was presented to the nurgle team; back up and rejoin the rest of the squad, allowing the wood elves to screen in front of you possibly, or score now and stop the drive - both of these weighted against the fact that whatever you do, with rerolls left and the field position as is, you could not stop a cagedive every turn for the rest of the drive.
The nurgle did neither, blitzing a member of the screen cutting off their team, then advancing the cage a short distance (and more south), deciding just to weather the storm and get the standard t8 TD.

Enter Dicehouse. Cagedive with lino? No problem. -2d pow/bothdown? No problem. Kind scatter? Kinda. 3+ pickup? Done. Dodge from st5 tents? Done with reroll, handover, Catch in disturbing presence? Done with catch reroll. GFI in blizzard? Done.

And that ladies and gentlemen, is "elfed"... Or more accurately, the somewhat almost inevitable when someone has 6 rerolls and is willing to throw an elf at your cage every single turn, as well as split your team.

So 1-0 at h/t, WE receiving second half.

No blitz for the Nurgle and a rather tame first turn for both - except the Nurgle left a rather enticing surf on (of one of the ST5 tents). On attempting it, Morehouse used his RR early in the turn on a 1d, and then rolled pow/push on the st5... so no surf, but instead, a cas, no-regen. Huge takeout, and with the tentacles gone from that side so early, as well as the disturbing presence, the quick TD was inevitable despite some nice scrambling from the pestigors.

The return drive wasn't quite as quick as it could've been, or needed to be, and was additionally slowed by some slight harrying, which meant all the wood elves had to do was avoid riot & snakes, or blitz! to win. The nurgle loaded the LOS (which meant the elves simply had to put a player in TZ of every nurgle then screen behind to completely nullify a blitz! which they did), but the KO event was Quick snap... the woodies dropped off the LOS, snuck back into the almighty, approved by Kenthis, full-Dakka offensive formation, and popped off a pass and that was it.

Congratulations to Morehouse on unforlorning Wood Elves (the achievements of others are meaningless to him and he's not won a major with them before), it only took waiting til the ruleset favoured them and everybody else from lrb4 is gone! We'll all be waiting with baited breath to see just how much you're going to break the tournament scene with whatever prizes you accept. Unless of course you end up stuck in Duskwood, knee deep in bottles of mountaindew for the next few years.

Commiserations to Menonaloco on his major final debut. It was a long slog, and the team seemed a bit weary from the journey, but the hunger remains. Probably won't be the last time we see this coach and team threatening in the latter stages.
