New Angry vs. Cleveland recap

The second AFC Divisional game featured coach FreeRange and his Dark Elfs from Cleveland fresh off of their 3-2 shootout victory over Oakland against the well rested (VERY well rested...) New Angryland Bulltrots coached by licker.

Both teams were running at full speed, neither missing any players, and both sporting TVs over 2000k. It was sure to be a clash of styles, with the Bulls hoping they could simply remove the Hounds from the pitch to make it a walk over, and the Hounds hoping that their vastly superior speed and agility would provide enough opportunities for them to jump out to a 2 score lead knowing full well that the Bulls would be very hard pressed to move the ball quickly.

The weather was perfect and the stadium was packed! The Bulls coach called 'Tails', as he always does in a nod to his star Centaurs, and won the toss, electing to receive and being the meat grinder the team had been planning for months. The Hounds gamely lined up their line fodder, and set themselves to take the pounding everyone was anticipating.

A quick snap allowed the slow Bulls some leeway in getting to better positions, but their blocking left much to be desired. They did knock down 4 elfs, but couldn't manage to take any off permanently. So they set up a loose screen and moved the ball towards the line, knowing full well that the Hounds had a wizard up their sleeve, as well as speed and agility to get to any ball carrying mistakes the Bulls might make.

The next few turns went quickly enough, the Bulls continued their attempts to punish any Hounds who couldn't get away from the Blockers, and the Hounds attempted to create pressure on the ball carrier as well as the screen. Eventually the Bulls found their blockers a bit far from the top side push the ball carrying hobber with Tom Buldry as a screener, and the Hounds loosed a lightning bolt KOing the lone hobber screening the advance. A nice 2d blitz dropped the ball carrier, but the ball bounced next to Tom, and the pick up pass attempt by the Hounds failed. Leaving them in a position to take several blocks.

New Angryland promptly complied, sending no fewer than 7 Elves off the pitch, sadly, if you're a fan of bashy ways that is, all but one elf landed in the KO box, and with the Hounds coach wisely choosing a Babe to help rally the troops the start of the 2nd half looked to see the Hounds with a full roster of elves down only 1-0. Certainly better could have been hoped for, but 1-0 at the half is about the normal expectation against New Angryland.

The elfs did set up for a manic one turn attempt, but a lack of rerolls foiled their attempt when the dreaded triple skulls showed on the block dice. There was some recompense for them however, as a lone fan heaved a large rock onto the pitch killing Andre Rippett, a rookie hobber who was standing on the line expecting to take a block from the Hounds, he never saw the rock, but we assume he felt it.

The 2nd half then began with both teams missing one inconsequential player, but otherwise having 12 players on the bench. Certainly there were several options for the Hounds with a full roster to work with. Score quickly and try for a steal. Play for overtime and hope to win the toss. Refuse to take the field. Which would they chose?

The kickoff was deep and both teams gained an additional reroll in the process. The Hounds sent 2 blitzers deep into the Bulls side, and landed a few good blocks. The Bulls countered by tying down the 2 deep threats with 2 players, including Zoltan Mesko who is the designated stopper with his ability to make diving tackles. However the Bulls counter blocking was ineffective. A couple turns passed with the Hounds trying to get their deep threats free, and the Bulls trying to tie down the line of scrimmage and land some heavy hits to make their job on defense easier. Neither team was having much success though.

Eventually the Hounds were able to swap the ball quickly to the bottom of the pitch, and send a couple players down to support the ball carrier. The Bulls were out of position enough that it would take several GFIs to counter this attack. Fortunately both Tom and Drew excel at going for it, and with Zoltan taking down a dodging elf, Stephan Ghostkowski was able to land a 2d blitz on the ball carrier knocking him down.

However the rest of the Bulls were still out of position to assist or recover the ball, and the Hounds were able to retrieve the ball, but wound up pinned along the sideling, forced to take several potentially devastating blocks. The Bulls were unable to deliver though, and the next turn saw the Hounds ball carrier able to dodge out of several tackle zones and make a dash for the end zone. However, coach FreeRange put up the stop sign, and instructed his players to attempt a screen to bleed some more time of the clock. One player managed to dodge away, but the 2nd fell on their face, once again allowing the Tom an Drew along with Stephan to take down the ball carrier with Drew managing to scoop it up. The Hounds were not to be denied though, a 1d both down from a wrestler popped the ball out, but the bounce was in the Bulls favor and the Hounds could not retrieve it cleanly.

The clock was running down, turn 6 then turn 7... the Bulls managed to block away the Hounds players while there was a bit of a scrummy mess at midfield tying down the Bulls blockers and several of the Hounds linemen. Drew tried to pick up the ball again, but his hooves let him down and it scattered between him and Tom. Both st4 side steppers though, so it was unlikely for the Hounds to be able to get a new scatter, or to remove their tackle zones from the ball. The Hounds tried their best, and came down to a 4+ dodge into a 4+ pickup with a pass attempt after to score. The dodge failed however, and the Bulls found themselves looking at turn 7 with a sidestepping blitzer in the endzone waiting for a pass, and an AG5 blitzer 7 paces out in position to scoop on turn 8 and do the things that elfs do the best.

This was not an appetizing position for coach licker. Throughout the 2nd half the Bulls had routinely failed to remove elfs from the pitch. One did go off with a BH after failing a dodge, and there were a couple KOs, but with the babe the expectation was that if the game went to overtime, the elves would have at least 10 players, and if they won the toss could manage one of those easy looking elf scores.

So the Bulls did the only sensible thing they could. They didn't swamp the ball with TZs and take their chances that the ag5 elf would somehow make a mistake. No, Stephen scooped the ball and rushed up field to hand off to Zoltan who then rushed just across the mid field line, and threw the ball further down field, hoping to get it out of reach of any of the elfs tied up around the los.

The play worked! But the throw was not deep enough to keep a witch elf from being able to scoop the ball on a pass attempt to a free dark elf in easy scoring position. As the witch dodged away from a blocker and made it to the ball the question was would she go for it to improve here passing line? Would she try to simply throw it over Zoltan? What would she do???

There was a moment of hesitation as she considered her options, and that must have been her doom, for as she moved to make an easier pass her feet tangled with each other and she crashed to the ground stunned. As were the fans, fully expecting OT. As were the Bulls, fully expecting elf ball to crush their dreams of advancing to the championship game. As were the rest of the Hounds, stunned at being shut out by the Bulls for the 2nd time in 3 games.

Well played FreeRange, for as one sided as the 1st half turned out to be, the 2nd half had many chances to turn either way, and I was really worried that you would score on turn 4 or 5 (whenever it was) and play defense with 11 vs my ball handling adverse team. If it went to overtime I really didn't like my chances as I was unable to take out enough elfs to gain any kind of advantage.

Best of luck to you in the AFC West, that looks a pretty competitive division next season.

The NFC North has also seen the rise of a new franchise, The Detroit Low'uns. This team of dwarf bruisers come to the division with high hopes for their first season, though some questionable preseason training sessions have already led to rumours of wide spread use of performance enhancing drugs. Either way the Superbowl is the dream.

Yeah but CPOMB teams haven't faced that much guard all season, much less in one game. Should be interesting to see how a Detroit team fairs; the previous occupant seemed to be cursed ever since he lost a playoff game vs two saurri.

Detroit know they have a tough season ahead of them but remain confident as those CPOMBing teams have to play each other too so a bit if luck with the scheduling could well see them dominating.

As for the Deathroller there is still the draft to come with some talented big guys coming through the college ranks.

Hehe...

There are no deathrollers in the NCBB... not even a dwarf team is there? Maybe a new one...

But the draft will probably scrape foreign leagues to let you get your ringers Very Happy
