Isn't other Elven teams being better than High Elves part of the attraction?

To each their own, I guess. Wink

The beauty of the roster is that it ends up with the personality of the coach imprinted upon it. If your High Elves don't float your boat, there's only one person to blame. Wink

Completely agree. Though personally pro elves are my favourite race in the game. Starting with side step is just win.

Yes, I like this philosophy also. This why I think there is room for lots of slightly different rosters. They would then suit the nuances of different coaches.

I think there are 2 reasons why they aren't very popular (already hit on).

1. They don't have a distinct playing personality and are the Jacks of the Elven Blood Bowl trade.

Speed, but not as fast as WEs.
Blitzing AV8 potential, but not as many as DEs.
4 Catchers, that aren't as good as PEs.

2. Also the look of the team is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. I mean some of them are wearing skirts aren't they? And where did they find those helmets?!

It comes from a more kid orientated time of GW, and after all we are grown men (that play with little figurines).

This one of those depressing threads where PG has got here first and said what i would have sad, leaving me either to rephrase it and look derivative, or be wrong.

HE do reflect the coach. My sets tend to be agile bashers that can dwarf their way through most situations and elf it when stuck. I find I struggle to want to buy catchers, despite their awesomeness. And I don't build to one turn, as that way lies the devil.

So why don't more people play them? I blame Peter Andre.

Not specifically of course.

But Andre is popular, not for any ability, or for his singing, or his hits. But solely for 'being around'. And thats why people play DE and Woodies. DE are now mainstream cool/cute culture. You see DE looking figures on 6yr old girls T-shirts. When something is cool to a 6 yr old girl, its SO mainstream it cant be cool anymore. FACT. But it has a certain 'lazy' cool to it. Socially enforced. And woodies win and look like the elves of myth. Again, culturally normal. Pick up a book on elves and those are the images you see.

High Elves are not like that. They look like warriors. Following most closely the LotR armies of Elven look/feel. This isnt how elves are represented at all in common culture and hence they feel less elfish to many. they lack the toys of DE, the panache of Woodies and the suicidal daring of Pro Elves. (wild elves, why not wild elves?). And we come full circle again back to PG being right. To coach HE you have to do the thinking, and even the elfing feeling is down to you to find.

HE require imagination, which we are slowly weeding out of modern life.

I like them because they can easily be built into 'street fighting elves' with the only low av7 being able to run away. But others like them to build cheesy one turners, others for fast playing sprinters with 4 catchers on field.

But hidden here is maybe another factor. While HE can, and should, become specialised into whatever type of HE team you want to build, they might be the most 'all around' team of the elves. And like humans, all rounders got hit hard by CRaP's move toward specialisation and away from team builds to player/legend builds. Another nail in their popularity coffin maybe.

So, for the tldr crowd:
HE unpopular becuase:
Uncool: (incorrect, ice cool but people dont realise it)
Cultural Norms: (dont look and feel like elves)
Require Imagination: (people prefer to have their thinking done for them)
Versatile: (bad asset in CRaP)
PG playes them: (fair enough)

I have to give the HEs one credit though. They have the best throwers in the game, by far. And while the passing game in Blood Bowl is weaker than the running game, I actually enjoy the fact that it's at least a semi viable alternative for the High Elves. My thrower just won me my last game with a massive long bomb and is averaging about 7.5 squares per game in passes.

edit: What I'm actually trying to say is that I'm liking the HE's at the moment.

Choosing between two av8 elf teams, i think most would take 4 blitzers over 2...

For a starting roster, sure. 4 x block. But any lineelf can get block. MA8 (up to 10) on the other hand...

Yes but when you lose a high elf block player it can be a slow rebuild. Dark elves on the other hand rebuild with ease 6 players with block or dodge is huge.

Plus ma7 jump up is non too shabby.

High Elves are good.

Dark Elves are good.

Pro Elves are good.

Wood Elves are too good.

My guess is that the people that enjoy playing High Elves, play High Elves, even if there are other elf teams to choose from, no matter if they are popular or not. Smile

When I came to Blood Bowl in late 2010 I read through the ruleset and immediately told my buddies I want to pick a race with armour and agility, as those seem to be the most important stats in the game. (Not sure that's true, but anyway.) They said High Elves. I couldn't do it; I couldn't play a race as *arrogant* as HE, I'm too much of a roleplayer and that's just not at all my style. So I went Pro (Dark having the reputation of being a bad idea for noobs. Good advice).

The other angle is that they bloat. A solid HE team is very very expensive. And in the Fumbbl B/R environments that's a bad thing.

At least you had your nick before he did; otherwise we'd think you settled for 'chest' with 'goo' already taken. =P

They are a lot like humans imo. Master of nothing but versatile. This is also their weakness though as the specialised teams are always the best in a perpetual environment.

This and this.
Definitely my second favorite team after humans.
The same coolness and playstyle, but with AG4.
Pure win.

IMO the problem with HE's is that the woodies and Darkies come out of the box a few skill up away from being a very good team.

High Elves need to play the "long hand" and if it all goes good then by game #20 they should be up and running.

Most coaches do not want to invest the time in # of games to get a HE roster up and really running.

I have said for years that HE's are humans with AG4, better catchers and no Ogre.
