DElfs are nice for a starting coach b/c they are "always" in the game. 4x Block is a solid core, Frenzy is a great weapon, MA 7 is fast-ish, 5-6 1-skill Blodgers are a gift, and Ag 4 can do anything - doesn't always pull it off, but it ~can~, and that's fun.

For a starting coach, I'd ignore the Runner (no really helpful starting skills, DO is unreliable, and AV 7 is fragile), and just run the ball w/ the first Blodge Blitzer you get.

Dark Elves are one of the best and most consistent rosters, and a great choice for a coach looking to learn the more agile side of the game. Start with 3 blitzers and a witch elf. Don't buy any runners or assassins. Buy your fourth blitzer when you can, and after that grab a third reroll. Stay at 12 players until you hit high TV.

1) Work on your positioning. Dark Elves can play the cage, screen, or passing game. I'd stick to the cage and screen, but learn the elf sweep two-turn touchdown and practice it against various setups. On a rookie team, the witch is your best ball carrier. Not only do you keep the AV7 out of the way, but dodge is a better skill for a ballcarrier than block is. Get her two touchdowns as soon as you can, she's improved greatly once she has block. Play around with frenzy, it should be a beast in the 145 club.

2) Work on your positioning some more. Learn the 2-deep defense, dodging away from slower, heavier teams to break contact. Try to limit your opponent's blocks to his one blitz per turn. Maximize your own blocks on him.

3) Work on your positioning a bit more. Learn to protect the Witch Elf, your only AV7 player. Understand that good coaches will know she is at the same time a threat and the weak link on your team armor-wise. See if you can go a whole game without getting her hit.

4) Build your roster with exclusively core skills, until you have an understanding of the second tier skills that can help you. Block, Dodge, Sidestep, Tackle, and Guard. Non-core skills are important too, but for now let's cover the basics and use blodge to work on our positioning.

5) Understand what stats and doubles do to your Blitzers, and how your plan for that player changes:

a) +AG Blitzers get leap and become ball thieves or strip ball specialists.
b) +ST Blitzers become hitters or hard to remove roadblocks. Either Mighty Blow or Guard is a great addition.
c) +MA Blitzers carry the ball. Sure Hands is a nice way to go.
d) One mighty blow is enough. You can't possibly have enough guard, but one attrition piece is sufficient for elves.

6) Develop your linemen. I might advise you to use 5 positional players, but that's because your linemen are the best in the game, and one of your biggest advantages is your AV8. 6/3/4/8 is a sturdy, mobile chassis that is perfect for Block, Dodge, Guard. Stick to that formula for now... and forever, really.

You should avoid to get picked by Legend player.
Try to play mostly against coaches no better than +10CR than you.
That way when you make something better/play better you will often see the result and it will stick. Moreover it will be more fun.
If you watch replays, try to only focus on a single aspect of the game because otherwise too many things going on and it's harder to learn something (information overload).

I was about to agree there was solidly good advice in this thread then i came across this, which is just plain bad advice. Or rather, is focused solely on one learning style. For others the exact opposite will hold true, more holistic learners will learn more playing a wider variety of coaches and absorbing the entirety of games and attempting incremental awareness raising rather than single skill/area improvements.

Another quote also caught my eye:

From one rubbish coach to another, I can tell you that, more than any other race, when I lose with orcs I at least feel like I had a fighting chance.

Which speaks volumes to perhaps the least explored aspect of a coaches journey of learning BloodBowl, their RL BBplaying morale. BB against real humans is a tough enviroment, it will be a while before most new players do well. it is vital to stay happy as you learn.

I have always thought Orcs the best starting race, not just because their high av, reasonable ag and variety of players teaches a lot of basics well, but also that their durability and affordability means the team will 'stay' in games, giving good game play value, and will develop as a team, which provides a fillip to the coach, a reward for the playing of the game even if losing.

It is no surprise to me the other coach notably preaching about keeping personal morale high and just playing is PurpleGoo, and thats my other tip. While in this thread almost all the advice is great, learn who to listen to. PG for example is probably the best BB player across every format it exists in right now, from tabletop to fumbbl and beyond.

I think it depends on who the Legend is.

Maybe we need a list of "Legends to look for".

For a lot of people it is not going to be easy keeping their personal morale high when they are getting steam rollered and milked for SPPs.

Most experienced coaches can point out the errors that lead to rookies going 0/0/10, 0/0/20. IMO you only really need the top coaches when you want to go to the next level.

Start with Dwarves and learn thevart of blocking and good positioning.

For me the best way to go is to start with orcs (for what PC said), dwarves (blocking) and dark elves (the agility game) for reasons stated above and dont go above 1600-1700.
Once you master the basics I suggest to try Khemri (advanced positioning), Humans (versatility and mediocrity) and a stunty (high risk - high reward)

There is no link between avoiding playing a coach having more than +10CR than you when you are rookie and poor variety of coaches.
That leave plenty of room for a huge variety of much better coaches that a beginner can learn from.

Avoiding to play the best when you are still learning the basis sound a sane thing to do if only for a beginner moral/fun.

It's like sport or chess, you get experience first and don't fight against the world champ right away, the difference in skill is so high there are nothing to gain for a beginner.
Step by step,it's my take anyway Razz
