in the options.nfo file, add the line

SpectatorName=THE_NAME_YOU_WANT

You can open it with notepad, in case you need to know that.

Big Idea: as so many options are set in the options dialog in the client, why not put player/ spectatorname there as well... as well as specnumber and recent dialog?
