If I was religious
I think I would have either switched from Political Science to something else, or I would have dropped out from the university some time ago.

The reason for this statement is not so much that I have just finished my master thesis in Political Science, but the events leading up to it and up to my bachelors.

Some years ago when I was writing my bachelor thesis, I was taking some extra classes at a business school, now at this business school you were automatically signed up for exams in the classes you were following and somehow this made me forget to sign up for my bachelor class exam. I followed the class and did all the assignments but forgot to click yes on taking the exam. I did not realize this until two days before I had to hand in the bachelor thesis and by then it was too late.

Having come to terms with the fact that through my own stupidity I had to wait six months to hand in the paper I went home and started packing since I was moving to a new apartment at the same time. While I was packing the car some punks ass kids decided to smash a window and take off with my bag containing my laptop, my USB backup stick and my external hard drive. So lucky me I was suddenly without computer and without the bachelor thesis I had just finished but was not allowed to hand in. I managed to find a 2 months old 12 page print and had to rewrite the whole thing from that, but I managed and I handed it in at the end of the next semester.

That was then, this is now.

Six months ago I started on my master thesis, I don't know how it is elsewhere, but in Denmark you sign a contract and then you have 6 months for a normal master thesis. Well 10 days after I signed my contract the graphics card on my laptop burned out, 3 months after the warranty expired. I managed to convince my mother to let me lend her laptop since I really did not have the money for a new one. Well I wrote on, on my master thesis until last Thursday, 13 days before I was to hand in the thesis, where that computer decided to give up and die.

I think I sat there for some 5 hours doing nothing, just looking straight ahead and sometimes shaking the damned thing to see if I could get it to start, but nothing worked. Luckily this time I had learned my lesson and had several backups in various places. So I retrieved my thesis, did the last minute corrections that you do and FINISHED THE DAMNED THING TODAY!!!!

Now had I been a religious person I might have decided that somebody or something was trying to tell me something, and being not at all to subtle about it, but being the stubborn non-believer that I am I never looked back and just kept going. I didn't even blame Nuffle or the RNG, even if there were times when I thought about it!!!

Yea I know, long blog, but I am done with my master thesis and have no idea what to do with myself right now.........

play some BB, lose, blame RNG...quite easy.

Congrats on the thesis!

Congrats on finishing the thesis! As for the incidents - Murphy's law strikes yet again (had my fair share of that as well).

Congrats on finishing this thesis ! You're more stubborn than me - I hate working and I know I would have gave up before that. (And it would have nothing to do with my religion :P )

If you have no idea what to do, I suggest playing Blood Bowl. It's always a good idea to play Blood Bowl ;)

I once lost a computer to one of the nastier virii of the late 20th Century. On it was the only (electronic) copy of my undergraduate final project. I spent quite an arduous time retyping the whole things from a paper copy that was marked up for editing.

My advice: more BB.

Then get crackin' on that doctorate ;)

Your story is a metaphor...

...it's similar to trying to pick up the ball with Khermi and score in 4 turns or less.

Clever, very very clever post. Well hidden in it's meaning, but I GET IT!

Religious or not, God loves stubborn people like yourself and will often bless and reward them for their perseverence. Well done, not giving up. It's not a matter of religious, spirituality or doctrine or any of that mumbo jumbo... there's men of faith that are quitters and there are agnostics and atheists that are quitters. There are men, like yourself, that stubbornly go on - and there are God-loving/God-fearing people who see those setbacks as a challenge from their Deity.

I see your point, though... and still say kudos to you for gettin' it done.

If you were religious your god might have helped you to do everything right at the first place. :)

If God loves this guy, he should have given him brains enough not to keep his back-up and computer in the same car...

Or, perhaps God loved him and let him find the 2 months old 12 page print...

Guess it is down to belief...

Gratz, anyway, man!

That was a fun read! Gratz on the thesis! And yeah the murphys law can be found anywhere, thats life.
There is also another law you followed(although its not defined as law yet, at least not that i know). Comes from a damn old-school movie, that i once loved being a kid. "No retreat, no surrender". Keep it up man!

I just hope after all that work they don't write TLDR on your thesis... ;)

Congrats on finishing that thesis! Did a Politics and IR Bachelor a few years ago myself. Then I changed careers and I'm now studying to become an opera singer. So if you don't know what to do I guess you could try that :P

Political science, sounds like the path to devil worship or worse politics.
Get a job or study something more useful like plumbing. ;P
