SWL Season XIV - Premier League - Round 6

Well, I came into this match knowing that a win here would pretty much give me safety from relgation, and with that at stake, I decided that it was time to hire Zara. We started with a fluffed connection (had Bad Press, Knuckledusters and Iron man), and it was going to be pretty much impossible to recreate the handicaps, so we had to start from scratch. New handicaps were Illegal Drugs (+ST Back Breaka), Morley's Revenge (Twilight Veil, Verminacular Vendetta) and Buzzing (Rib Smasha).

The big one there was Morley's Revenge, which kept Twilight Veil out of action for almost the whole match. The Illegal Drugs were certainly handy - giving me a ST4 tackler. who managed to stay on the field all match, and made many of the important blitzes.

The first drive saw a poor kick from the Vanguard land right in the waiting arms of Loony Tossa. The orcs quickly formed a cage but some poor positioning meant that the vanguard were able to do what looked like a perfect job of demolishing it. Stuns on two players in key positions meant that we had to resort to some more risky moves to get the ball into a safer position. Lucky for us, Nuffle's eyes were pointed elsewhere, and we got away with all of the important ones (early dodge with Zara to blitz, and a 2+ dodge with the ball carrier with no RR available). After this, and the failed 4+ dodge to get a decent hit on the ball carrier, we moved down the field again. Things were really looking up, and we managed to get the ball to Bone Krasha in what appeared to be a pretty secure position. Glacial Warden made a daring move which took the ball out of her hands, but fortunately for us left it sitting right in the middle of the cage, and we were able to recover it reasonably well for a TD in turn 8.

At this point, the elves were well down on numbers too, with 3 in the KO box, and 2 in the BH box (Gothiqu'ne Romantika and Phantom Navigator). The KOs came back at half time, so they had the numbers again for an offensive drive. The kickoff roll was Blitz, and although we had kicked too deep to make real use of it, we were able to reposition some of the players. Even so, there was little chance of a defence against 10 (mostly) skilled elves, and Crimson Warden had no trouble scoring in turn 3.

After this, it was back to the grind. Another unlucky kick landed right in the arms of Loony Tossa (she must have been wearing magnetic gloves or something), and with two players off to the toilets, there was not that much the 8 remaining elves could do to prevent us scoring a second touchdown.

Our strategy of playing like orcs has finally paid off, and we now we fink wer safe from relegation.

------------------- Twahnlow Votes -------------------
3 pts - #2 Glacial Warden
Daring moves, some of which worked, and some which didn't. This fellow was the only elf to actually lay a hand on our ball carrier, and was unlucky not to have been rewarded with a change of possession. He's the kind of guy who has the guts to put himself on the line time again and again.
2 pts - #1 Frost Warden
This fellow was the key blitzer from the Vanguard. He never managed to actually injure any of the girls, but inficted several stuns, and with his sneaky side-stepping, he just kept popping up in the most annoying places (and it also meant that we never got a decent chance to lay in the boot, so we settled for witch elves instead).
1 pt - #13 Crimson Warden
Well, this fellow made the all important move into the endzone, and also managed to inflict a coule of KOs (though one of them was from a foul, so it doesn't really count as far as the twahnlow vote goes).

Possibly one of these votes should instead be going to Hopp'n Mc'Cauldron, for her part in the early chance to get the ball into elvish hands. Unfortunately, she spent some of the important parts of the game off the field, and fluffed a chance at redemption when she tripped over right in front of the ball in the dying seconds of the game.

Doomed. How do we escape the madness. The perversity of the last two matches has exceeded even the ineffable audacity of nuffle. Well this one wasn't so bad, but it sure compounded the last one.

After a good rollup, an accidental restart saw us damned by the handicaps once again, and a niggled amazonian dirty player restored to the lineup coupled by the lost coin toss. And Zara. It was a gloomy start, but the lads jumped into the fray and got themselves into a reasonable position. But that was the end. A stream of cas and ko's, failed dodges at the wrong time, and succesful hits, also at the wrong time and a blind ref buried us. Couldn't even force them to go in for a try or fail a single dodge. We haven't even been able to do more than tickle av7 armour for the last two games. Our only cas has embarrasingly come at the hands of the crowd. But most of all, it's been Twilight's failure to turn up to 30/32 of the team's turns from the last two games. And when the captain's not around, a ship will inevitably be cast adrift. It sure felt like that and despite generally working very well as a team, perhaps it was that simple fact that preyed on their minds as their plans seemed to fray before they materialised.

Is this the end of their dream run? The implications of going out whilst still at full strength will be demoralising.

-------------Twahnlow Votes-------------

I really can't remember much the girls did. They didn't need to do anything stellar. The Vanguard made sure of that. They didn't fail anything either I suppose.

3 votes: Rib Smasha
While the lads were at a low, had the cheek to go a 2d against block on a dodger, just for fun. And had it work. Forced us to distraction for a turn while we pushed her into the crowd. Shouldn't have let her get to us.

2 votes: Loony Tossa
Didn't miss a beat. Whether it was a dodge, a pickup or a pass. Or even forcing the failed dodge.

1 vote: Back Breaka
Hammered us. Wasn't a thing we could do to stop her from blitzing her way to wherever she wanted to be. Particularly after she disposed of Storm Warden for the first half.
