SWL Season XIX - Premier League - Round 1

Opening round for season 19, in a group that looks a little more bashy than last season. On paper, the stronger team, but with two players missing, and giving away three handicaps this was going to be a close match. The first half saw a drive that took the full 8 turns, with Loony Tossa holding the ball tight all the way to the end zone. Realising how close she was to making the SWL Hall of Fame, she wasn't about to give the ball to anyone!

We did take some risks - seeing opportunity to send a couple of chaos dwarves into the crowd, and they paid off. If things had gone badly, it could easily have cost the game. Obviously this was a risk dan was willing to take, but, without taking the risk of attempting to send them into the crowd, I would have been up against at least 3 turns of defence before half-time, and with the number of dirty players waiting around, I decided that it was worth the risk.

The second half saw dan tempting doing his best to draw out the wizard, and with only 9 players left, I had to take a shot at it. Unfortunately for the chaos dwarves, it worked too well, knocking down the ball carrier, and two chaos dwarves. This gave Loony Tossa a chance to make good use of her agility to get the ball out, but Back Breaka wouldn't take the ball from her, instead, passing it straight onto Face Maula ... who was in position to prevent the dwarves from getting through, but not such a good place to be holding the ball. It came as no surprise when the dwarves took her down, but Jenni's failed dodge left a path for Loony Tossa to get through to the ball. Learning from her mistake, she handed the ball over to Da Flinga instead of Back Breaka. A good decision it turned out, and Da Flinga ran as fast as she could, straight for the touchdown line, and bringing the score to 2-0.

With a solid lead, the rest of the match was played very defensively, in hopes that we would have a team to field for our next match. This did mean giving away a touchdown (I'm not sure that we could have stopped it if we'd tried), but kept the remaining players in good nick.

A very close match. There were a couple of crucial moves in that first half, and several in the second half that could have turned the game around completely if they'd gone wrong.

------------------- Twahnlow Votes -------------------

3 pts - #3 Dan
The dwarves are certainly the core of this team, but dan was the only one to do any real damage. No casualties, but a couple of handy KOs, and a few stuns in there too (always handy). The rest of them seemed to spend a lot of time just getting into the way.

2 pts - #9 Jenni
Despite the fact that she messed up a couple of crucial moves, Jenni performed pretty well. With iron man on her side, and AG4, it meant she was able to take plenty of risks, and she did do a decent job of handling the ball (most of the time anyway). She kept getting in the way. Definitely a player to watch out for in the future.

1 pt - #13 Sarah II
Maybe not the toughest job in the world considering the circumstances, but Sarah did score a touchdown for the regulars. That has to count for something doesn't it?

Notable mention - #8 Nat
With 3 dirty players on the roster, there were going to be fouls. Nat led the team in this regard. As with pretty much anyone that watches Blood Bowl, we do enjoy a good foul, so he's one we'll be keeping an eye on this season.

Great opening match for Season 19.

Although beaten on the day by the better team, the Regulars showed that they will not be outclassed in Premier (touch wood). A critical moment was Jenni failing a 2+ dodge (one of my few attempted) which would have had her on the ball and possibly the game may have ended differently. But it wasn't to be tonight.

The lights were probably a little too bright in the larger stadium and the Regulars a little overawed by the occasion. But there is always next round.....

Twahnlows:

3 points - Da Flinga
Scored the first TD and then picked up under pressure, throwing the pass/hand off (can't remember) that won the match dodging through 1000 tackle zones. You can't ask for more than that.

2 points - Back Breaka
I think she really is an orc.......

1 point - Elbow Kikka
Soaked up the damage at critical times. Who needs AG 3, when you never have to dodge away?
