Since I've already written it, here's the match report I put together - not much difference, but the perspective certainly is.

The WIL Fringe competition was jumpstarted as Naboimp's elf band took on Emrys' vampires in the first match of the Shetland Division. The Sylvans won the toss and elected to receive. The Sylvans quickly moved the ball to the left sideline in a loose cage, but Wir Wunschen countered, knocking down a lineelf to position a vampire next to the ballcarrier. The Sylvan's Catcher, Andela Dorilia received some assists to knock the vampire down, but a bit overenthusiastic, she tripped trying to break through the thralls behind him. The vampire used the distraction to get back up and level the ballcarrier while the thralls tightened the noose around the elven team.

Since she had broken behind the lines when she fell, Andela decided to break open for a pass. Another lineelf moved to help her out while the rest scrambled for the ball. Unfortunately, the Sylvans appeared nervous and jittery in their first match and kept tripping in their dodge attempts. Between the tripping and the hits of Wir Wunschen, inevitably, a thrall came up with the ball and ran toward the endzone. Breaking free at last, several Sylvans gave chase, but they were too late to stop the touchdown. With only a turn remaining to score, the Sylvans were unable to get an equalizer before the half.

Wir Wunschen received the second half kickoff with a chance to put the game mostly out of reach. They quickly formed a cage with the thralls while the vampires went ahead to inflict damage. The Sylvans reacted by ganging up on one of the vampires, knocking him out of the game. Shortly, thereafter, the remaining vampire could not contain his thirst for blood and left the pitch as well.

It was about this time that the Sylvans decided to not be quite so tentative on defense. They started placing tackle zones on the thralls. "They're not orcs or beastmen after all," Sylvan lineelf Jerolus remarked after the game. Indeed, the Sylvans got the better of the ensuing skirmish as many thralls went to the turf, some of whom even left the game. When it became clear that the diminishing numbers of thralls would not be able to protect the ball much longer, the ballcarrier heaved the ball over the elfs' heads deep into their own end.

As Sylvan Thrower Gladius Winflow raced back to collect the ball with a lineelf accompanying him, the rest of the team worked to make sure the thralls were staying on the ground. Gladius picked up the ball, recognizing that time was beginning to run short. He heaved the ball just across midfield to where Sylvan Blitzer Forcerren Garderrus was standing over a thrall he had stunned the prior turn. Forcerren caught the ball and dashed for the opposite endzone. While several thralls managed to give chase, Forcerren slipped beyond their reach and scored the tying touchdown.

With so little time left in the match, the game devolved into a skirmish around the line of scrimmage. There was a scary moment for one lineelf who looked like a goner, but the apothecary was in fine form, saving the poor lineelf from certain death. He should even be able to play in the next match. As the whistle sounded, Naboimp and Emrys exchanged good wishes while their players exchanged angry glances.

The weather was perfect for Splendiforous Sylvans' first foray into League action and 66,000 turned up to witness the occasion. Visiting Vampires and thralls of Wir Wünschen Ihr Blut looked resplendent in their new blood red kit.

It was the visitors who took the lead late in the first half having shown themselves to be just as competent as the elves at taking down their own players, Nicolai von Pfaffbach having proved to be rather peckish.

Both sides started the second half with ten, Rellex having been badly hurt in the first and Hertwiger refusing to wake up after being bitten by Nicolai von Pfaffbach. A rash advance by Nicolai led to his being surrounded and stunned by five elves. His brother, seeing a gap in the elves' defence, then managed to knock both himself and lineelf Nixol out, much to the thralls' relief - with one vampire KO'd and the other stunned, their necks were safe for a while.

The elves put continued pressure on the thralls' cage, which hardly advanced at all for two turns. The vampires' cause was not helped by Nicolai being distracted by a pale maiden's neck - the thralls would have to play the last five turns with no vampire to assist. Finding himself forced to the right wing, Gaert took the decision to throw the ball away, as far as he could from the elves in the hope they'd make a mess of the pickup, pass or a dodge. Unfortunately he failed to throw it far enough and Gaert was introduced to the crowd who expressed their displeasure. He'd not be returning to the pitch in this match!

The Sylvans, realising they had plenty of time, started to methodically knock down the remaining thralls before getting the ball forwards to Garderrus, who ran for the corner. Wir Wünschen Ihr Blut managed to get a couple of thralls close but he shrugged off their flailing arms to score the equaliser with one turn remaining. Hertwiger once again refused to wake up, so it was eight against ten for the closing minutes. The vampires made sure the ball was safe and the game ended in an honourable draw.

Were it not for the elves forgetting how to dodge early on the result might easily have been a home win, so it was the vampires who were happier to settle for a point.
