I have never done anything 'useful'. No discovery of mine has made, or is likely to make, directly or indirectly, for good or ill, the least difference to the amenity of the world.
Hardy was essentially a novelty prop. I'd stick him there on the front line with his block, and every time he didn't die from an attack I'd say "That's one hardy player!" and then the spectators would boo me. Shame he did eventually die, I need to find a mathematician to quip with again.
