Blaster (2003) - Blaster exploited a Windows operating system vulnerability and let users know of its presence with a system shutdown warning. The Blaster virus was a complex malware that spread itself not through email, but through a vulnerability in both the Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines. This malicious software was detected in mid-2003 and by then had infected hundreds of thousands of computers. Once a computer was infected, it displayed a message box indicating that the system would shut down in a couple of minutes. It was also programmed to launch a DDoS attack to a server run by Microsoft by April 2003, but was already contained by that time. Discovered in the code was a hidden message to Microsoft founder Bill Gates saying “Billy Gates, why do you make this possible? Stop making money, and fix your software!”
