[S] Forest Goblin

A long time ago, a tribe of goblins was migrating West from a famine created by crops failing for several years. After marching through the Wastelands and other inhospitable places for weeks they finally arrived at the edge of a forest. Had they known it was Athel Loren they would have kept on going. Soon after entering the woods, they collapsed out of hunger and enchantment. Luckily for them, they were first discovered by pixies instead of Wood Elves, who would have slaughtered them at first sight. The diminuative Fae were in a bind themselves as lots of Great Spiders had recently moved in on their forest and were mercilessly hunting the Fae with their webs. The pixies saw the wisdom of sparing these violent savages. As soon as the goblins were revived, a deal was struck. The goblins would cull the numbers of the spiders and pay annual tribute in exchange for the right of inhabiting the wooded hills that were swarming with spiders. They set to task with a barbarian enthusiasm, using slash-and-burn tactics to destroy the spider nests. However, the shamans had predicted that the fate of the tribe would be tied with the spiders, as their usefulness and welcome would probably end at the same time. So the spiders are never hunted to extinction. While the Wood Elf Lords find the slash-and-burn agriculture and the guttural language of the goblins distasteful, their economic and military services and the favour of the grateful Fae lets them continue with their quietly shunned life. As war would be undesirable for either side, the savage impulses of the goblins are instead transferred to the Blood Bowl fields. * This story is purely fictional and has nothing to do with 16th century Scandinavian history |
