the result from the rest of the tournament suggest that the best final would have been Russia vs Finland.
and then Finland would have won...(grumble)

Before olympics, everyone thought that Finns would be about 5th or 6th team, and if lucky, they might play for the bronze. I thought that too.
But gladly this is the beauty in sports. You never know for sure. I think that last World Cup gave Finns some confidence against the bigger countries (Russia, Checks, Canada, USA) as they saw that they can challenge them toe-to-toe. I think that in the World Cup final against Canada there was something huge. Finns challenged Canada and played for the win with their playing ability. In Nagano (1998) they needed luck and Luck to challenge the "big boys". But not anymore.
And as I saw Russians play now in olympics, I thought that they would win for sure. They played so well that it was some of the beautiest hockey I've seen in a long time. But in Fin-Rus it was amazing to see how Finns took away Russians weapons, and won the game quite solidly.
And you have to remember that Swedes faced Swiss in the first round, as they lost to Slovakia. Did they lose on purpose, I won't say anything about it. But I think that it was same kind of situation in Salt Lake, when Swedes faced Belarus.
But as we all Norsemen know, in Fin-Swe anything can happen. There are some good wins for Swedes, as there are some good wins for Finns. I just hope that the game is tight, fair, and decided by playing. I don't want to see bad calls from refs of some lucky bouncing goals. To either way. I want to see a good and hard game. |

The Macavity option is Finland! Go Finns! Finnish it! Defend the Finnish line! Fight to the Finish! Finish them off! Finish what you started |

I give the Finns a small advantage based purely on patriotism and team spirit. Sweden got an advantage when you look at it player for player but I think the Finns got a huge advantage when it comes to team morale. You just can't take your patriotism out of the closet every fourth year and really work your ass off your team and country. The Finns never puts their patriotism back like we Swedes do which means that theirs is as shiny and new as ever while we still are dusting ours. |
