It rounds to closest 10,000, so half of 290,000 = 145,000, rounded to closest 10,000 = 150,000.

Right, yeah. was trying to remember the table but the principle is the same. At 290 you have a 1/6 chance of losing half, which would drop you to 150k ish. Can’t remember which way it rounds. I’d still venture that on average that gives you more gold than deliberately sitting at 190k. I think I worked it out back when it was released but couldn’t say for sure now.

Before I had been trying to sit at 290k.

"Major Incident: Half the gold in your Treasury (rounding up to the nearest 10,000 gp) is lost to an unfortunate mishap"

So 0-90k EM can't trigger. 100k-190k 3+ means you don't lose anything and a 1 or 2 means you lose a D3* 10k. 200k-290k means you need a 4+ to keep everything. A 2 or 3 loses you D3*10k and a 1 loses you half, rounded up.

Sitting at 200k+ (you have to somehow get to 290k and it's harder than getting up to 190k) is fine if you don't care having at the lowest 100k+ (plus subsequent winnings) after your next game, in case you roll a 1. Which means you might have between 110k and 240k to replace potential losses. Might not even be enough to replace certain positionals.

Sitting at 190k means that after the mistakes roll you'll have at least 160k, then you'll add winnings, so a total between 170k and 270k after your next game.

It is true that if you don't roll 1s you'll have more cash in the first instance (maths!) but it's also true that the second option gives you a more solid base to rebuild from, in the worst case scenario.

There's probably a nice bit of game theory behind this, but I'm not even sure if the rules (BB16) allow you to buy and fire stuff simultaneously. You can certainly fire a rookie and buy another rookie, non sure you can do the same switcheroo with coaching staff.
