A guy over the weekend sent me a few emails about his computer locking up after scoring a touchdown in a network game. He was running WinXP on a relatively fast computer. I don't think that had much to do with the problem though. First he totally reinstalled the OS and that didn't help. Then he changed out his network card and his problem was solved. Will this solve all the problems? I don't know. But if you are having this problem and have another network card lying around, try swapping them out and see if that helps. At the very least try downloading the latest drivers for your net card and see if that helps. For reference the card that was having problems was a
"Netgear FA311 fast ethernet adapter"
and the card that solved the problems was a
"3Com EtherLink III ISAPNP Ethernet Adapter (Generic 3C509b)".
I can't remember who mentioned they had three computers and only one of them was having this problem since I couldn't find the old message thread. It you have the time it would be nice if you could swap net cards from one of the working computers and one of the non-working computers to see if the problem follows the net card from the non-working computer. |

I was (and still am) one of those that was having problems with my computer rebooting when a touchdown was scored or halftime occurs under WinXP. I can run the game under Linux/FreeBSD perfectly fine on the same system (with the exception of the ball not showing up, but that's another matter).
I'll give these solutions a try. Unfortunately, I have two of the same type of ethernet card in that system. I do also have that exact same 3Com card in another system, but I don't have an ISA slot on my main system. Stupid new hardware! |

Well, it looks like it may have worked... I just upgraded the Linksys drivers to non-WinXP versions, and I'm not crashing on a guy that I always crashed on. I figured it was nothing to do with the client, but you never know...
Thanks, Ski. |

Nevermind... I still crashed on the updated drivers. Not about ot go spend money on a new NIC. Guess I'll just play in FreeBSD with the old icons. |

I have that card in my system and it works now, though it didn't at first. I just recently re-installed XP to fix some other problems and it just started working correctly. |

Bah! Switch to a 3Com card anyways. They are vastly superior to any of the other makes of NIC. |

Yea, go RealTek
Some of the RealTek cards even work with RIS (which will mean something to some people)
