Hi there,
I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on IRC clients. I use a mac and I am trying to get more ranking/Stunty Leeg games. Clearly I have aggravated at least one other user by trying to do this through PMs and i have also been informed that, because of the clunky way they work, a lot of users refuse to make matches based on PMs anyway.
I have never used IRC before though and, upon searching for a good client, I suddenly realised that there are hundreds of them. Are there any other Mac using Fumbbl players out there who could suggest a good one?
Thanks in anticipation.

I locked the repeat thread.
Hydra IRC works for me. See user guide! Don't have a Mac, mind. |

I'll point you at the page on IRC on the main site.
That has a link to a javachat client that can be used as a stopgap (and, possibly, in places that won't let you install a client, like work ).
I have used Hydra and mIRC with varying degrees of success.
Personally, at the moment though I'm using Pidgin, as it lets me integrate various other protocols into one client, which I find useful.
Again, I don't have a Mac, so, take with a pinch of salt. |

I use Colloquy on my mac. The latest version doesn't run on snow leopard, but you can install the last version that does. |

HydraIRC is great and I have been using it here since 2003 with no problems.

Hydra doesn't run on macs, I think Colloquy is what most mac users go for. |

Colloquy is the best IRC client for Macs, hands down. |

While I don't belong to the mac fan base, I advise X-Chat works great on all platforms. I also heard something called Hydra IRC which should be quite pleasant too. |

Thanks for all the advice guys. I really appreciate it. I had come across X-Chat and I think it'll come down to either that or Colloquy once I have a chance to check that one out.
Thanks again.

For the Mac, I've tried a number of IRC clients with varying success:
X-chat (Free) : http://xchat.org/
Powerful features, but I hate the UI
Colloquy (Free) : http://colloquy.info/
The UI isn't very friendly for lots of chats. Otherwise, a fine client.
Chatzilla (Free) :
Again, not suited for many chats and I don't like the idea of having to have it part of the browser.
Mice IRC (Commercial, $15) : http://mice-irc.com/
I liked it until I updated to Snow Leopard (doesn't work). Not recommended due to no updates in ages, development seems to have stopped.
Linkinus (Commercial, 20 euro) : http://conceitedsoftware.com/
The client I use now. Works quite well for me. |

I'd add Adium to the mac IRC clients.
It's a general instant messager, but does support IRC. It's useful to me, because I spend a lot of time chatting to my friends on MSN network, and I find it useful to have all my instant messaging protocols together.
That said, if you don't already use another instant messenger, take one of the ones Christer mentioned, Adium isn't a brilliant IRC client alone. |

Thanks again for all the help. I couldn't seem to get Colloquy to work. My mac is the wrong spec for X-Chat so I managed to find Snak which is free for thirty days. That at least gives me time to find one that is compatible that is free.
Snak has worked pretty well so far so I might even consider paying for it if I don't find anything else.
Thanks again for the advice. You are all lovely people |
