trying to create a group for a local set of lads. How do I invite people to the group so that they can then create their team for the group

You can send them a link to your group. e.g.
https://fumbbl.com/p/group?op=view&group=13932

Also, a link to sign up their teams. e.g.
https://fumbbl.com/p/group?op=view&group=13932&p=teams

So I've sent the link to the group. They created a team but it didn't automatically show up in the group. Do I need to then invite them separately?

They might need to hit that second link to accept the invitation.
