Hey, everyone, I've just completed my first full season with a team since coming back to Blood Bowl here on FUMBBL after many years away. The team in question is the Suppurating Smashers, a Nurgle squad.
This is in fact their second redrafting: I created the team years ago, before the format change for the 2020 rules.
At the time, I decided to preserve the developed Rotspawn and Bloater players, and ended up forgoing team rerolls and experienced Pestigors. In retrospect, I'm not sure that was wise, and I think the team's 2/4/9 record for its first season in the current format affirms that view.
Notably, the team's wins all happened in the final third of the season, suggesting that getting my feet in it again as coach, the build-up of Guard on the Bloaters, and the addition of three team rerolls all improved its performance.
Given my lack of experience, I would welcome thoughts on what to do with redrafting the team. I could, in theory, start signing them up in tournaments, but I don't think I'm ready as a coach and I don't think they're ready as a team.
Here is what I have in mind:
Redrafting the Suppurating Smashers
Current TV is 1460K, and the redrafting budget is 1260K, so some painful cuts have to happen somewhere to trim 200K out of the team.
What's more, the current TV doesn't take into account the "20k cumulative agent fee per season" according to the redrafting page, so I think the team "redrafting" TV will end up being quite a bit higher, as the Bloaters and the skilled Pestigor are all carry-overs from the team's original incarnation. Those players are, if I understand the situation correctly, have just finished their second nominal season with the team, even if the team has only played through its first season in the new format.
First, I think I have to ditch the ST5 Bloater.
He didn't actually develop at all this season - most importantly not getting Block - and one of my two wins happened without him as he was missing the final game due to an injury. The +ST also counts for a big chunk of the difference in TV, as does his, er, "free agent" fees, since he was one of the original players on the team.
Second, I think I need to hold onto the three Block-Guard Bloaters and the double-skilled Pestigor.
I can build the team around this core, methinks. If cutting TV requires it, I could go down to two skilled Bloaters, though I'd prefer to hang onto all three of them.
Third, everyone else is fair game to retire.
It would be nice to hang onto the Rotter with Kick and the Rotter with Dirty Player, but if it's between keeping them and the core four, they'll be off to the golf course and the peewee league coaching circuit [1]. If I can keep either or both of them, I'm debating whether to get Block on the DP Rotter or save up SPP for Sneaky Git or Pile Driver.
Fourth, I'd like to stick to two rerolls.
As I state earlier, I'm of the mind that cutting all the rerolls materially contributed to the team's poor record this season, so I should like to hang on to at least two of them. Keeping all three would be nice, but I don't think it's doable if I want to hang onto the core four players, and I think I can get away with two rerolls and saving up for a third during the season.
Anyway, that's my thoughts for this team. Since this is my first-ever redrafting, I'd appreciate any suggestions more experienced coaches might care to offer.
Postscript and footnotes:
As a postscript, if there are any unusual typos, like strings of "=" or "+" characters, my cat was laying his head on the right-hand side of my laptop keyboard as I was typing this. Thought some of you might enjoy hearing that.
Note 1: Regarding retired Blood Bowl players doing peewee coaching, I have the droll thought in mind of a retired goblin player ("I wuz lucky, lots of me mates got eaten!") explaining how to properly foul to a pack of 10-year-old children at the sort of children's league games you might see across North America, including how to alter one's boots for best results, and where best to stick it in, so to speak. ("If they's got dangly bits, make sure to give 'em a good hard kick right there, wot?") |

HEAVILY EDITED:
I wouldn't keep 3 Bloaters: you want to build up two rookies so you can redraft at least one and keep your agent fees down. I'd keep 2 Bloaters and the Pestigor, and as Nurgle you always have stuff to do with the money. Just keeping the Pestigor and two B/G Bloaters, that's 220k, or 260k if you keep the +ST Bloater, in improvements and fees.
Rotspawn 140: 140 subtotal
4 Bloaters 460: 600 sub
2 Pestigors 150: 750
4 Rotters 140: 890
2 Rerolls 140: 1030
Take the B/G guys on 11 and 4 SPP, I guess. That's not terrible. Bummer about the +ST guy. +ST is on 7 SPP, not getting Block would just make him easier to redraft, but if you only get 1260k, that doesn't help. If you had another 30k, he'd be good to keep.
Advice:
1) Early in the season, chosen Block is ok on a Rotter, just so you have some Block. Otherwise don't pick skills on Rotters. Roll them or save up for stats. If the player hits 3 SPP, chuck them dice. Worst case, you roll Sure Hands and are out 35k. More likely, you either get Kick, DP, Block, or Wrestle, and are giddy at having straight up saved SPP and TV, or you get Fend, Frenzy, Tackle, Dauntless, or Pro, and are quite pleased with your half-price skill. Shadowing and Strip Ball are somewhere in between.
2) Late in the season, let your Treasury fill up enough to maximize your redraft. At 15 games, even if you go 0-0-15, you need just 200k after Expensive Mistakes to max out your redraft. |

Block Guard guys are great, so is the sure hands goat. Rest should be cut and filled up as you see best, more goats or more rerolls. ST5 guy is sad but I'm sure he will make a great bouncer somewhere in a Slaanesh night club or something. |
