The Danish government - and other western governments - argues for freedom of the press to publish racist cartoons, at the same time as they participate in the occupation of Iraq, banning newspapers and TV-stations.
IMHO, the right to publish stupidity should be defended, and instated where it doesn't exist yet. What do you think? Is the Jyllandsposten story an example of hypocrisy?

Um, the cartoons aren't even racist. They are heresy (to muslems) but they aren't racist unless I am a racist for hating one particular arabic asshat (which would be quite ironic since I just went to a "turk shop" and bought som delicious fig marmelade). You might want to see the pictures yourself before calling them racist. http://www.drawmohammed.com/thumbnails-2.html |

Rubbish - Denmark isn't occupying anything. While I objected to the war itself and the way it was carried out Denmark isn't occupying anything. Our prime function has been to educate the police force and make sure that the local Warlords didn't move into areas and instate themselves as local kings waging war on the rest.
Denmark (nor are the rest of the Western countries) are not banning Newspapers or TV-Stations - most of what is being banned is easily accessible in Denmark. Those who are banning them are the newly elected Iraqi government.
Don't even try to think you can use Denmark as an excuse to spread that kind of nonsense. |

Take those pictures, replace the arabic stereotypes with jewish stereotypes and say they were published in Jyllandsposten 1933. Would anyone have any trouble seeing their racist content? Answer: Yes, those westerners who were raised with the racism of those days - they'd say that the drawings were just "dealing with the problems of immigration".
The censorship in Iraq began with direct orders from the western occupation forces, and continue under the "elected government". I've never heard any western governments (including Sweden) raise their voice against it - though the censorship would be gone the minute the occupiers gave the order. |

Without freedom of press, governments will be lying to their citizens even more than they do already. |

Apparently you do. Should we stop bumping this thread, or do you think it's sufficiently de-railed? |

So you object to the "occupation" but think that the countries in Iraq should force the newly elected government to dance to their tune?
Well. That's all I have to say on the topic - seek me out in real life if you want to debate this with me further
Cheers, people

Quote: | Everybody Loves Me Baby Lyrics
<SPOKEN>: One, two, three, four!
Fortune has me well in hand, armies 'wait my command
My gold lies in a foreign land buried deep beneath the sand
The angels guide my ev'ry tread, my enemies are sick or dead
But all the victories I've led haven't brought you to my bed
CHORUS:
You see, everybody loves me, baby, what's the matter with you?
Won'tcha tell me what did I do to offend you?
Now the purest race I've bred for thee to live in my democracy
And the highest human pedigree awaits your first-born boy, baby
And my face on ev'ry coin engraved, the anarchists are all enslaved
My own flag is forever waved by the grateful people I have saved
CHORUS:
You see, everybody loves me, baby, what's the matter with you?
Won'tcha tell me what did I do to offend you?
Now, no land is beyond my claim when land is seized in the people's name
By evil men who rob and maim, if war is hell, I'm not to blame!
Why, you can't blame me, I'm Heaven's child, I'm the second son of Mary mild
And I'm twice removed from Oscar Wilde, but he didn't mind, why, he just smiled
Yes, and the ocean parts when I walk through, and the clouds dissolve and the sky turns blue
I'm held in very great value by everyone I meet but you
'cause I've used my talents as I could, I've done some bad, I've done some good
I did a whole lot better than they thought I would so, c'mon and treat me like you should!
Because everybody loves me, baby, what's the matter with you?
Won'tcha tell me what did I do to offend you? <whoo, yeah!>
Everybody loves me, baby, what's the matter with you?
Won'tcha tell me what did I do to offend you?
Yeah, everybody loves me, baby, what's the matter with you?
Won'tcha tell me what did I do to offend you? |
