Ignorance??

I'd say ignorance is believing in some imaginary made up story.

If you ask me religion was designed to control the population!

"DO this and abide by our rules or thou shalt know the full wrath of Satan in the fiery depths of hell!"

Free policing! Government bargain!!!

Where was your so called god when I watched a warrior track over a poor Iraqi child? - Taking a dump on his imaginary toilet no doubt.

Strength comes from within - not from the weak floppy pages of some age old rag.

Question: is this thread not designed to ask everybody to just get along? Let's not have a flame war in a thread designed as an attempt at consolation, please.

AFK's right. I edited my post because it came across incorrectly. My apologies for that.

I was simply trying to bring up the fact that arguing over such matters is pointless. Discussing them is fascinating, interesting, enlightening, etc... My poor choice in words - innocently intended, but a poor choice nonetheless - sort of moved us back over to the arguing stage.

I think mUst said something that can apply to a great many of us. For example: in games like "knighs of the old republic", where one can choose whether to be good or bad, I always play as an angellike, selfless saint. This is not so much because I am an angellike saint, rather that I really wish I could be.

I believe strongly in beeing good, and really wish i was (at least more that I am), but in a chatroom I can always act like I am the best person the world has seen, and no one will ever call my bluff. Lying? Not really, since I believe in what I say. I just don't live up to it.

Though this was not the conclusion of your post, it's an interesting statement. In part I agree. Take science for example: the theories try to describe the same universe, so if two conflict then one must be right and the other wrong. As you said: the world is either flat or round.

But there are a lot of things where it is harder to decide what's true: who can say for surely if capitalism or socialism is 'right', for example? Even though we all may have our own opinion on it (god knows I have) it all comes down to belief.

But then again, that was just what macavity said in his intro to this thread, right? So, nothing new under the sun. At least not from me.

To AFK_Eagle: Wonderful post, I agree! (even though I am far from a professional) I think Homer Simpson said it best: "You can prove anything with statistics. 70% of all americans know that."

This reminds me of Churchills lesser know quote.

Random side point, since I started this. Sorry if it sounds too Post-Modern (whatever the heck that means), but I THINK that it is fair to say that one of the most interesting things about genuine, "i just want to know" style discussion is that it is impossible to deny someone else's experience. A Friend at my old job once asked me point blank, "Can you prove God to me?" I said "No". He then said, "I don't see how you can believe in somethign you have no proof for." I corrected him, " I have proof, but for me, not for you."

Renagade's comments have really given me pause for thought. Thanks for sharing honestly. I have never been in direct fear for my life, and the violent deaths If seen were all accidental (though the snow plow was fairly gruesome). I have no idea how I would react to being in a situation like you described, and I (selfishly perhaps) hope I never have to know. But thank you for illustrating my point. From the "outside" you can't tell someone that they are wrong, simply due to the fact that you ARE on the outside. In my own life, I spend a fair amount of time around evangelical Christians, and some (not all, not near all) have made some unbelievably insensitive comments about the fact that I am divorced. It's not that I think there is something horrible about dis-liking divorce (trust me, it isn't a great thing). But if you are going to make a comment about how I live my life, ask me. Ask me what happened. Ask me how I felt. Only when I am convinced that you care about me, will I care about your opinion of me.

Sorry for the sermon, folks.

Mac

Quaint. I always enjoy being a total heartless bastard. The only thing I regret in games like this is you're either a goodie-goodie or a psychopath. The "intelligent villain" option is usually non-existent.

I probably enjoy swindling people and killing everyone who gainsays me as cruelly as possible because I'm a push-over irl, and I would really love to use the Force to choke someone and say "Kneel, peon."

Yes, except for one thing: did you know that 43% of statistics are just made up on the spot? Laughing

A lot of scholars (ofc the names evade me at the moment, but I have read this in many places NOT on the internet - heh heh) that this is indeed why religeon was initially created - to give us humans 'guidelines' for behavior which helped us evolve up from being apes. People needed some reason why not to kill each other on a whim, etc. The problem is that now our societies have evolved somewhat past the need for this instituion (in its original form in any case), but the nature of the beast makes change rather difficult in most cases.

I dunno, that's just how I've heard it put, thought I'd throw the thought out there.
