Resolutions?
Blimey, I'm feeling an old man this weekend. Indulge an old man for a bit, would you?

I've never counted Blood Bowl years in calendar years. Or FUMBBL birthdays. Or the anniversary of my joining, or by any obvious system; moreover the passing of BB time is clocked (by me, at least) in FUMBBL Cups.

At first glance; it's a crap system. It's not a system anyone else uses, it's not obvious or logical, but it's my system. I think it's because of the historical hold that the Tournament has over the site for a few weeks. Even the most cynical coach towards such high TR [R] events (/puts hand up) can't really argue with the buzz a 512 KO Tournament can create. It's a freaking monster this thing, and it's always felt like a fitting end to the year.

I suppose the size of the thing always leads me to reflective mode. What has the last 12 months held for me, and where am I going? No more so than this year, where for whatever reason, I seem to be treading water a bit in my FUMBBL existence. I've not lost any of the joy of the game, but growing up is painful. The means of earning food and a bed is chomping on me and my time, I've other commitments as I make nice with Mrs. Goo (by no means a chore, but certainly time consuming), weekends disappear in smoke whilst catching up with long lost Uni buddies, it's almost Christmas again already, dammit! BB slips down the list to play-when-I'm-knackered-and-my-heart-is-barely-in-it status. The passing of time and the time chomp come to all of us who are lucky enough to have progressed in life, and, what's more, it can only get worse. If you're a Uni student reading this now, or even earlier than that, beware, this will become you - if you're lucky!

The state of FUMBBL today is strong, yet uncertain. Cyanide is a nagging thorn in our side (currently, at least, I still maintain it'll be gone by the summer as the bugs and lack of support consume the product and destroy the fledgling support it's gathered to date), LRB5 seems close enough to touch, but far enough away not to be able to grasp, we've taken a summer knock in terms of games played. My time is slipping away, no longer can I pour over WIL replays or spec plenty of games in my free time; FUMBBL time is too precious to do much other then play at the moment. I think now for the first time, I just need to find something to play for. Afterall, who's to say there will be another year after this?

In previous years, even with an abundance of free time, I've had no goals. Not coveting CR, or not thinking Majors are worth winning, or whatever, makes it easy just to have fun with the game. Even so, even aimless, I can still remember with great clarity where my coaching career (so to speak) was at FC time; at year end. 2006, a n00b trying to be someone, learning. 2007, an [L] crusader, someone at least loud and known. 2008, someone that could just about compete with anyone in a fair game. What of 2009? Where's the forward movement?

I need some help coming up with some New Years' Resolutions. Aiming to 'win things' is strictly out for two reasons. 1. What it turns you into. I shall pimp and cheese for no man. 2. Frankly, I think I've won everything I've ever coveted. Leave that point there, through fear of Fun Police arguments. Grid filling or award chasing is also out, it's never filled me with joy...

So FUMBBL. The FC is drawn on Oct. 14. New Year's Day. Give an old man a hand with some goals? Some resolutions?

Inspire me! :D

Resolution #1 should be get a coach pic uploaded
Posted by Chewie on 2009-10-04 21:23:22
The only resolution i'd make is to try to make yourself laugh in every game you play. Anything else is a bonus.
Posted by Chewie on 2009-10-04 21:24:05
Or just upload a photo of Mick Hucknall instead.
Posted by SillySod on 2009-10-04 21:24:19
Try and see how high you can place in the FUMBBL tour? Its not like you have to be a horrific cheese pimp to do well. Other than that I'd play for the fun of playing, maybe make some vampires again?

Get up old man ;)

Impresive entry for the blog... I usually wont answer to such a personal thread from someone whom I don't know well, but I felt some affinity (I spect to finish at the uni this year, and allready have my spare time cut down)

1) as I really enjoy the BBox, my first option is "try the box again". May be not full time, but it could work for someone with little spare time. Now that there are tournaments, team building has a point. And you can see your BWR and BBR (that's not a goal, but it's nice to see the numbers jump)

2) but as you tried it and left, may be you don't find a goal there. My second option is "try to make a signature team in Ranked (or BBox) and learn to enjoy it". It seems to work for some coaches (Hellfishes, Darkbones, Dolls, Startrek...) at least for some time. Also, focusing in one team probably suits your tiemetable better.
You have some long standing League teams, but the format of leagues has its limits.

i'm with phil78, i like to know how pretty my friends and opponents are.

Also, play more Tourneys would be my resolution, and adaopt a newbie through academy.

Will you snap out of it if I tell you that with this blog you're on the verge of turning emo? :D
Posted by DukeTyrion on 2009-10-05 02:24:51
I have a suggestion, but it's a hard nettle to grasp.

Forget all your previous thoughts on Blackbox, the players, the team, or even the reduction in game in Ranked. Clear your mind and try the division again, with a fresh team and a fresh outlook.

Try and create a team or two you will play to 100 games, which seems to have been your break point in the past. I would suggest High Elves and perhaps Necro's.

It's amazing what can change with a fresh outlook. I use to hate Skaven, but then I chased the 'Player' Awards and found out how awesome they were.
Posted by Purplegoo on 2009-10-05 08:35:19
Several good suggestions. I shall digest and ponder - thanks!
Posted by Psilocybe on 2009-10-05 11:51:51
something to aim for you say, how about learning mrs Goo to play so you and her can have some fun in the late night hours, play to see who is going to empty the dishwasher or clean the toilet, or maybe just to have some mutual fun together and see how she progresses with her teams. just a thought but imo that could be fun and cool.

man up philip and cheese it for a major.

or start a smack winning contest with me and piggy.

or try some stunty cups.

perhaps you could be a hunter and go legend killing or contract fulfiller.

do something silly for fumbbl donations a la scoring troll.

AND UPLOAD A DAMN PHOTO OR I WILL GET IT DONE FOR YOU!!!!!!!
Posted by Gran on 2009-10-05 16:08:28
I was going to suggest Nin's 2), create a signature team. It does take some time and devotion, but I think building a team franchise is the best form of team building you can commit yourself to. Those are also the most fun to follow for those of us in the crowd /cheering and /booing.
Posted by Purplegoo on 2009-10-05 18:28:46
OK, thanks for all the help. The resolutions:

1. Try [B] again with a fresh outlook. I shall incorporate two teams I don't like (Chaos + PE) into this second chance ball.

2. Create a 'franchise team'. This will be [R] HE, since they're my favourite race. I'll try and delete some teams I don't care about to force me to play 'the team' more.

3. Upload a photo.

4. Attempt to enter 1 official tourney a month. Probably not the Tour in it's current format, since I find the lack of variation dull.

5. Be less emo.

We'll see in a year's team how I've gotten on!
Posted by Hogshine on 2009-10-05 19:18:17
Aw, don't be less emo. That makes me so sad I could cut myself while crying about how all existence is doomed. :(
Posted by Kalimar on 2009-10-06 11:30:00
Christer and I try very hard to have the lrb5 client ready to play until the end of the year. So there just might be something new to try for you next year :-)
Posted by Purplegoo on 2009-10-06 17:57:41
Gogo Kalimar!

I must admit, I'm sort of meh about LRB5, but it does feel like a shadow across the site, if you catch my drift?
Posted by JockMcRowdy on 2009-10-07 21:56:41
of course i caught your drift you are full of beans!!

where is the photo?

can i have some beans please, for reals
Posted by pythrr on 2009-12-21 20:38:31
