Thanks for the links, I knew about the palio of Siena but not about this.
In France, we have "la Soule" from the old days where 2 villages had to bring the "squig" (ball = goat stuffed belly) to the goal (a pond, a tree, a village center place, ...), with all moves and tricks allowed. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soule_(sport)
