Fumbbl Etiquette
Recently I have found that many of my game offers have not recieved replies. Is it just me or have the general standards of courtesy dropped in recent months? Is is that difficult to send a reply saying "no thanks"?
It may be that some of the more recent members of fumbbl have arrived from the cyanide site where games seem very impersonal.
Also there seem to be far less logging into IRC when looking for a game. Useing IRC is much easier than PMs when searching for a game so I encourage new members to use it.

I'm a great advocator of the "Golden Rule". Treat others as you wish to be treated. If you would like other coaches to respond to your messages/game offers then you should do likewise.

Fumbbl is a great site. Each & everyone of us contribute to making it great. Lets all do our part to keep it that way.

It is not new phenomena. I agree with you. Sometimes you dont get reply. I used to it, although i dont like it either.

Black Box has made common politeness obsolete.

Yes, it's sad...

Not new, though. I made a very similar blog entry like 2 years ago or so... But i agree with you

Some people might put their team on GF, they cant find a game within 5mins and then begin to do other things (search forum, toilet etc). Then in the 7mins mark you send them a message on IRC and they are away now. Then 15mins later they come back and remember they were looking for a game, but now as more than 10mins has passed they might think you already have found a game and does not feel they should reply to you at that point in time.

And messages on FUMBBL, not all people see it. And some does not sit and F5 the page.

I agree with your view and post, but this etiquette problem you speak of have always been around. While Cyanide is bad (IMO), I dont think you can blame cyanide for this though :D

I blame those pesky foreigners!

Just don't ask anyone for games via PM (or respond to them), and stick to IRC only.

You'll save yourself a LOT of grief that way.

I somewhat agree with what you are saying and to some of the comments posted. One thing I have found is that some of the newer coaches are not aware of the benefits of Irc. After getting a game through pm with a coach I have not played before I ask them why they did not use the Irc? Usually I then send them a link to Irc through a pm and try to encourage their use of it for the future.
No there is not a menacing club behind said encouragement.

not sure if that is new

The good thing is that once Christer upgrades the Gamefinder no more having to ask around for matches and so forth.

Thus no more coaches never responding to challenges and so forth.

Finally I will be able to get games in ranked without having to talk to you people!

;D

I have to confess, I'm one of those that regularly finds myself forgetting I have a gamefinder team up (especially on my second half hour looking for a game); but I try to always respond if I miss someone's message, and it makes me sad when people don't respond to mine (although I tend to check current games if they don't respond, as often they will have just started a game as I messaged them, and so don't check their IRC/PMs for an hour or two while they play the game).

As to IRC: Some of us still play on computers where IRC doesn't work. Specifically, my school computers can't run it for various reasons (so about half my fumbbl time, I can't access IRC, which makes me sad face).

My 2 cents about PM:
if the offer is an unfair cherrypick then it doesn't deserve any reply;
if the offer is fair a reply (be it positive or negative) should ever be sent.
Posted by bobafettsmum on 2012-03-12 08:43:13
I think "cherry picking" is very subjective. I would imagine that the majority of us offer matchups that we think we can win. Therefore we are all "cherry pickers". I personally think a reply is applicable no matter what.

With the new gamefinding setup being developed for ranked we might find the interaction gets even less. Hopefully people can pick it up for the matches themselves.
Posted by Overhamsteren on 2012-03-12 10:31:11
Cherrypickers deserve a reply too:

"LOL keep trying you dirty cherrypicker you!"
Posted by maysrill on 2012-03-12 15:41:23
I'll admit to being in the camp that often ignores cherrypickers, hoping they will go away. "Your zons and my CDs" is a good start to not getting a response, especially if there's a 40TV or 90TV difference in your favor.

Most offers I just accept, with just a quick check of the race/TV being offered. Certain trustworthy coaches don't even receive that level of scrutiny. Some guys you just know you'll have a fun game with, regardless. In the end, that's really the issue.

(note: if I "just feel like playing" I'll take what I get in the box. I play Ranked when I see people I enjoy playing, or just want a nice fun game with one of my older teams)
