Madness? No, this is GW!
It seems the strategy of abusing and alienating the userbase is working miracles over at GW HQ. Now they are targeting sites related to Warhammer.

What strange economics class did the executives at GW attend to conclude that this was a good and sane way to make profit?

No biggie, really.
They're a company with responsibility to share holders.
They also have a legal department that have to prove their existance. And lawyers aren't the most customer friendly guys.

Everyone can produce Minis (in principle), and probably cheaper than GW.
All they have that is really worth anything is the Names and IP.

I think they should decide on a specific strategy to make money and stick with it. Now it seems they are just going with the idea of "Let's make sure we protect every imaginary source of earnings, at all cost!!!!", thus screwing with the customer base at every level. After all, GW is not going to make any money by alienating the userbase.

GW sucks.

Being an author and having a scholarly interest in communications I have alot of sympathy for, and interest in, the concept of intellectual property. That said, laws are too often the anvil to money's hammer. I don't financially support GW anymore.

My reasons are threefold
1. blatantly creating and changing game rules in a manner intended to necessitate further purchases (to the detriment of the efficacy of the rules, and through these the game).
2. horrible store environments.
3. stuff like this.

The neoliberal bull[expletive] philosophy behind the company's choices is particularily ridiculous given the nature of their products. Namely: they destroy community where the products they sell have community as a prerequisite to use.

I heared it all started when the got a woman in charge of the legal department. Women can go to great length to destroy a mans hobby. Maybe this is one that aim realy big.

Instead of gunning down fansites, they should offer to sponsor them in exchange of advertisement. Now they just lose money when they go after their own fans.

They're not attacking any site. They're just doing the bare minimum required by law in order to maintain their copyrights and intellectual property. Just like for this site, these letters will be the first and last thing they send to those sites; they won't pursue the matter any further.

Move along people, nothing to see.

What Zombie69 said, move along.

yar i gotta agree with zombie on this. GW will do the minimum necessery to protect ip rights and then they will get back on with ignoring the fansites like usual just like here.

We all (or mostly) overreacted when christer got our letter but after a few changes they didnt even bother to reply to him when he asked if all was now ok. They dont actualy give a damn. they just have to protect ip because thats what any business in their position would have to do. sure they could probably do it in a more freindly way but these are letters from lawyers and NOT from games developers. there are plenty of reasons that gw sucks (monopolising the market and hiking up prices knowing full well that the majority of the fanbase that supported them on their road to riches will still end up pouring all their money away..... screwing up good games systems to make them more "sales freindly" etc) but doing the basic necessery actions that you too would be advised to do if you had a business like theres is not one of them.

i dislike GW intensly but for very selfish reasons. If im gonna waste my effort truely hating a company GW are gonna be DAMN down the list :D

This wasn't the C&D letter Christer got, this guy realy got sued.

Yar sorry i should have read more clearly. In fact having read the forums about it n all the other info this is clearly now EVEN LESS of a big deal than i thought before. :D

Sumary:

Once upon a time there was a nice legit fansite that gw was happy with, the owner sold it to another company who charged for membership and sold advertising space despite this being blatent infringment (they were still using gw images without permision.. fine until you charge). Gw is slappin em for it. Sadly the fans over there will suffer but as many of them in the forums seem to realise this is teh company that owns thems fault and NOT gws.
