Just made my first ever Blood Bowl team and I am very happy. Tonight I am going to read over all the rules and play a few practice games. Then who knows maybe I will be able to play a few people.

If you've not played the game before I'd probably recommend taking orcs or maybe humans to start with. Gobbo's can be difficult

Undead is another good starting team. As Jarvis said, Goblins are a bit special, you're probably better off starting with some other team.

Check out the Academy, both the division and the #fumbblacademy channel in IRC. There are people who are more than willing to help new players learn.
Once you're comfortable with the game and interface, Ranked or Blackbox are the common places to play. (Generally save League play until you're a bit more seasoned)
