SWL Season 14: Premier Game 4

One for the purists. Germany scored early throughKarl Benz, who was on the end of a Manfred/Wilhelm special, with Carl Jung seriously injuring Hopp'n Mc'Cauldron along the way. VOTSA recieved the return, and led by Twilight Veil they managed to stall until scoring through Frozen Tsunami just before halftime, 1-1. VOTSA's first half success had been paved in KO's, and much of their second half could also be acredited to 3 of the 5 KO victims not returning for almost all of the second half - including both Storm Vermin.
VOTSA recieved and looked to stall again in the second period. Reluctant to score early, in case they gave Germany a chance to regain valuable players, Twilight Veil got battered and KO'd, Glacial Warden found himself in the seriously inured box early in, while for the skaven, Carl Jung discovered later he'd ended up in the skaven injury bin himself. The Vermin were desperately unlucky not to steal the ball on several occasions, and finally when they did, Kaiser Wilhelm was taken down in a miraculous tackle by Gothiqu'ne Romantika. Down 2-1, and with only seconds remaining, Germany looked to Kaiser Wilhelm for the unlikely equaliser, only to see him fall in the end zone, and spill the ball. That one play pretty much summed up the whole game; Germany were good enough, but today really wasn't their day.

Twahnlow Votes
3 votes- #8 Gothiqu'ne Romantika: Saved VOTSA from being down 2-1 with a desperate tackle on Kaiser Wilhelm. Look forward to seeing him next time.
2 votes- #4 Twilight Veil: Slippery bastard was caught and knocked out eventually, but not before he'd dominated the first half, orchestrating the first VOTSA TD.
1 vote- #1 Frost Warden: Took Carl Jung out toward the end of the game, reward for a full game's hard work.

VOTSA vs the Vermin. Their fifth matchup now and the games are always tense, dramatic, and defy any attempt to fall into a regular pattern.

As usual, the vermin came out of the blocks hard, dropping Hopp'n before she knew what hit her and sending our apothecary scurrying just moments after he'd finished packing his med bag. The lads missed their blocks early on and let the rats in for an easy try. Second drive, we got lucky early on, sending the teeth of the vermin machine (the two vermin) back to the ko bins and really began to outnumber them when the ref bravely (or foolishly?) stood up to the virulent vermin and sent their dp off. Given a reprieve, the lads stalled for all they were worth - it's not often you get a quiet passage of play against the vermin. 1-1 at the half.

Going into the second half, we were worried we hadn't done enough. Whilst the vermin managed casualties with their few big hits, all we'd managed were ko's while outnumbering the rats pretty handily. It was enough to keep the two storm vermin concussed though, however the lads were a tad concerned Claudia might break free from the assistant coach's box. When it was obvious she wasn't going to take the field, the lads started the second drive looking to stall as much as possible again but the vermin made some critical hits early on and while they were doing it tough without the storm vermin, we too, were soon without our three top players. It was up to the rookies to hang on to the ball with four gutters buzzing around. Risky, but survival against these rats is always paramount.

Turn 13 we erred and gave Carl Jung an opportunity, whilst simultaneously failing to leave a tackler backfield to defend. Carl pounced on the opportunity and got the ball away. That looked to be that, but a dazzling move from Romantika and a counterattacking swathe of stuns turned it back. After that it was just a matter of getting the crowd to leave a few trash cans near the try line to trip that pesky one turner from making a debacle of a tight contest!

On paper, I suspect the Vermin had all their bases covered - there weren't too many weaknesses in their lineup. But the lads had a good day today. I don't think they'd care to try and replay this one ;)

Big hit on Hopp'n early in the game and was then a menace for the next 15 turns. Couldn't keep the gutter down.

#2 Votes: Otto Von Bismark
Unlikely hero I know. He twice failed his blocks. Once to make it easier to get the winning try...but he also made it damn tough. Survived a foul, then another armour break second half and most importantly, didn't roar in rage once the entire game and most of them were not blitzes. His move in Turn 13 or so into the midst of the delf attack was like throwing Gortrek the Troll Slayer into a goblin unit and was part of forcing the error which almost let the vermin get away.

#1 Vote: Colonel Klink
With his tackle, he caused a few headaches before finally getting ko'd late in the second half.
