The second game of the season, and once again Deluxe got a nice rub of the green. Starting with a freebooter to make up the numbers (and not wanting to go in a man down against a tasty looking Fury side), the players were under strict instructions to “reach out and touch someone” in a bid to level out the numbers. Though they did manage this quite rapidly, a KO put them back on parity. Still, they rumbled down the field to get the first score mid-way through the first half. Kicking off they managed to swarm the ball carrier with skinks thanks to a nasty stumble by a hapless blitzer and force a turnover. Going in at halftime 2 nil to the good may not be quite a fair reflection of the game, but the Deluxe were definitely grateful for the buffer.
Second half seemed to be a continuation of the first (well, obviously I suppose…), with another turnover (once again mainly due to some awful dodging by the Fury) leading to almost all the lizards behind the defensive Fury screen and the ball in the safe hands of the noble freebooter skink. A simple hand-off, despite being surrounded by a wall of saurus’, was spurned by Rocco jr in what would have been the simplest score of his short career to date. Instead the ball lay invitingly close to a Fury lino, who pulled off the move of the half with a slick pick-up, dodge and pass straight to the safe hands of the star Fury blitzer. The only player even remotely close was Norman, who was promptly submerged under a sea of pointy-eared havoc, allowing Anger to stroll over for the score. After that the game petered out with The Deluxe not quite trusting the hands of their mobility players in such a situation and the saurus’ keeping it tight. Quality game, the Deluxe had the better of the luck, though some impressive SPP rolls by the Fury make them a team to watch…

And other tales of woe

The Furies good start to the season comes to a screeching halt against a well turned out Deluxe.

The Fury kick and, with early casualties exchanged, Deluxe grind down the pitch with the Fury unable to make an impact on the Lizardman cage which allow Deluxe to take the lead mid way though the half. Receiving the resulting kick whist out of re-rolls proves a disaster after the first dice rolled in one turn are double skulls followed the next turn by a failed 2+ dodge as the first dice rolled. 0-2 at half time and the Fury fans are not happy.

Receiving the kick off the Fury attempt to mount a better offensive than for the previous drive with the results given above. Looking like a re-run of the second Deluxe touchdown they break down the pitch but crucially drop a pass to prevent the freebooter from taking the glory. For the only time in the match the Fury look like a team on the up and recover the ball, complete a short pass, storm down the pitch and floor the only Deluxe player capable of reaching the ball carrier.

With three turns remaining the fans harbour the prospect of a late comeback but solid defensive work by the Deluxe allows no opportunity and the game ends 2-1.

Defending the performance the Fury coach points out that there are no permanent injuries, the winnings will allow the team to field 11 players in the next game and the team gained three skill rolls (Including a +1S on the MNG Blitzer who will have to learn not to sake his own eye out on dodges). Not a complete disaster.
