A battered and depleted Rovers' Championship squad were wheeled out for a lively opening fixture against the always-competitive Hammers. A pre-game malady ran through the weakened Rover's team, depriving them of two of their experienced BoBs, who both subcumbed to old war wounds and left Rovers fielding only 10 orcs at the start of the game.
Receiving the kick off, they went to their traditional strengths, with Ryan Green retrieving the ball and passing to The Duke, who - with the help of Bubb and Trollope - made good progress down the left flank, safely engineering a break and then stalling to T8. Meanwhile, the Orcs armour held firm against Iron Man Knuckleduster-equipped wolves, golems, and fouly zomies alike. First half plan completed, 1-0.
The Hammers receive in the second half, and the 10 orcs set up a pressure screen. Mysteriously, the kick off lands in the rubbery hands of a zombie, who shambles forward, then left a bit, then backward a bit, looking - one suspects - for something to foul. Too late, as in T11 the Duke dodges once, dodges again, bursts through a non-existent gap and smacks the confused revenant into KO land! Recoving the ball, The Duke is soon joined by a green wave of support, and leads a break downfield to score in T13. 2-0.
The last four turns see an exciting break down the left by the noob Hammer Wolf, who - after being at first foiled by the Duke (who then snaked to fall over and drop the pill), scores in T16 to make it 2-1.
Post game Rovers announce the beginning of their rebuild, letting Craig David (BoB, 3 seasons service) go from the team and replacing him with new recruit Carl Regan. This attempt to increase the fitness of the team was somewhat undercut, however, when Tom Jefferies annouced that he had picked up a premature aging injury, and joins the list of Reavers with ongoing niggling complaints.
Onward to Rd2, and wishing the Hammers better luck next game.”
“Well........ Not much You can do when the Str4, Sg5, Blodge, leaping, ball hogging, luck magnet commonly known as the Duke is on form and boy was he on Form today.
Scoring both reavers TD's and running rings round the hammers squad as if they where a bunch of zombies (Which isnt actualy as hard as it seems since they mostly are) and preety much winning the game single handedly.
Was a close fun game and without the Duke in tow we may have stood a chance against them, as it stands we manged to score and get a few SPP on new wolf Lupine and suferd no serious injuries,
With the only down side being an FF drop Id say its a preety good start to the season for the Prem Under dogs, Role on round 2.”
