#14 Residue – Broken Ribs (MNG)
This game was Coach 859's and his EDIAAs first NWFL game and they were determined to show that they weren't going to be the league doormat...

Handicap of KNUCKLEDUSTERS was given to The Monster.

Canvas Professionals won the toss and choose to receive first.

The Kickoff result of Brilliant Coaching gave Coach 859 an extra reroll.

T1 L: In their first turn, the lizzards made a few successful blocks as they attacked the top half of the pitch, including a jarring block that KO'd zombie Slime, but their turn ended when skink Diego failed to pick up the ball.

T1 N: Turn 1 for the Necros had them trying to strengthen the line on the top half of the pitch. FG Creature pinned Saurus Claude Monet against the edge of the pitch. Werewolf Grim streaked aggressively forward trying to put pressure on the ball in backfield.

T2 L: In turn 2 the Lizzies wasted no time before blitzing the vulnerable Grim and knocking him to the pitch. Diego managed to get control of the ball but he waited behind a line of skinks while the Sauri and Kroxigor knocked down much of the weaker necro line.

T2 N: Turn two for the necros was mostly just standing back up but the Creature did manage to push Saurus Monet off the pitch. Grim stood up and dodged away from danger taking up a more defensive position in the backfield.

T3 L: The saurus establish a good pocket on the bottom half of the pitch and advance the ball about to the halfway point.

T3 N: The necros try to correct and get in front of the ball. But some of the line is tied up and is clearly beat. While they do establish a wall in front of the ball, the center of the pitch is thin defensively.

T4 L: The bigger lizards continue to bash up zombies and the skinks slowly follow them up the field.

T4 N: The necros do there best to punch through. And in fact zombie Residue gets a block on the ball carrier but is only able to manage a pushback. As Grim tries to dodge his way out of a pin on the sideline he falls down and is KO'd.

T5 L: The skinks take advantage of a gaping hole along the sideline and move into scoring position, three skinks caging around the ball carrying Diego.

T5 N: With Grim KO'd the necros have no chance to get to the ball, so they make what blocks they can and try to put enough pressure on the ball so that they can keep the lizards from stalling a turn.

T6 L: Not taking any chances, Diego goes ahead and scores.

T6 N: With three turns to score, the necros try to establish the top half of the pitch. Grim is able to get control of the ball and he moves up behind the line of scrimmage.

T7 L: The lizards stay in a defensive stance, crowding the backfield with skinks and saurus.

T7 N: The line tries to make some blocks, but is not really able to push the cage forward fast enough. Grim impatiently moves beyond the cage to try to get in scoring position, but leaves himself completely vulnerable to the lizard defense.

T8 L: The lizards swarm the lonely werewolf, knock him down and steal the ball assuring the the necros will not score this half.

T8 N: Knowing they have no chance to score, the necros try their best to put a beating on the lizards so they can give themselves an advantage for the next half. Grim manages to make up for his impatience by seriously injuring a skink.

Second Half

T1 N: The necros recieve the kickoff and get to work trying to establish themselves in the top half of the pitch. Unfortunately Grim can't manage to pick up the ball.

T1 L: Saurus manage to punch through the line and three skinks move through to put pressure on Grim who is basically alone standing next to the ball.

T2 N: The Necros mark the skinks and Grim picks up the ball and blitzes one of the skinks. But he only manages pushbacks and ends up in the tacklezones of two skinks. Although the two Wights are marking the skinks, it is a dangerous position.

T2 L: A saurus is able to break loose and blitz grim, but only gets a pushback. The other saurus knockdown zombies and most of the skinks dodge out and take up defenseive positions.

T3 N: Lord Filth seriously injures another skink and Grim dodges out and makes a rush right down the middle of the pitch. While he doesn't have much of a cage the only immediate threat of blitz is from a skink in the backfield which is not marked.

T3 L: The lizards manage to free a saurus for a blitz at the relatively undefended Grim and he gets knocked down. A skink swopes in and secures the ball. The creature also goes down badly hurt, and although Coach 859 is able to regenerate him his absence from the pitch will be felt by the already overpowered necros.

T4 N: Wanting to get the ball carrier before he has a chance to zip down the feild, Grim gets up with intents to blitz but gets tripped up trying to dodge out and falls down.

T4 L: The Saurus' set up a line defending the top of the pitch and skinks Ansel Adams runs to about the half way point on the pitch.

T5 N: The necro wight Lords show that they are not to be trifled with and blitz a saurus out of the way and manage to both bare down on the ball carrier. Meanwhile on the other side of the pitch a group of zombies score a small victory by knocking down the mighty kroxigor!

T5 L: The sneaky skinks use a clever handoff play to escape the wights and the lizards manage to punch a hole allowing skink Jim Davis to rocket past the necro defense into great scoring position. With no players close but the sluggish zombies it appears that a score is inevitable.

T6 N: The necros put some pressure on Jim Davis to assure that he will have to score next turn, but at this late stage of the game it is of little help to the necros, who have assuredly lost this match.

T6 L: The Lizards take no chances with any extra blocks and Davis runs in for the score.

T7 N: With two turns to go, the necros are determined to put points on the board and bum rush the bottom half of the pitch trying to get into scoring position.

T7 L: The Lizards set up in a defensive stance but maybe get a little lazy since they knew that even a score here would not change the outcome of this match. A lone saurus guards the sideline, after that is wide open because the skinks failed to cover.

T8 N: The creature pushes aside the saurus and a clear lane is opened. Grim has to go for it once but gets in the endzone. In a game that had not gone to good for this bunch of walking corpes, this small victory felt good.

T8 L: The lizards make a few tries for some extra SPPs but take their victory in stride.

We talked after the game with Head Coach and Voodoo Necromancer, Coach 859, and this is what he had to say:

"Well, we went into this match knowing that we were gonna have a rough time both with the speed of the skinks and the strength of the saurus' and Krock. For the most part I think we handled the saurus' ok, but we gave the skinks to much room to run. The real problem was our offensive scheme. We have to do better than just giving the ball to Grim and have him running out past the pocket and getting drilled in the open field by the defense. But overall, we got out with no major injuries and banked enough gold to fill out the roster a little more. Plus we got a skill up for Grim, so I'd say we look pretty good going forward and for a preseason game I think that's all you can ask for."

Thanks to Coach SirOrange and we'll see you next week!
