#4 Sierra III – Pinched Nerve (MNG)
XFL Elf Finals:

It was a very interesting matchup - the star and wizard for Jiger made it a very even fight. We had more secondary skills (block, guard) - both sides had a mighty blow tackler.

The first half started off with a short kick + blitz and Jiger was all over us. However, a RR was used on a push blitz to clear a path to the ball, and they did not want to risk the gfis - so the ball was not caught and caged. As a result we managed to grab the ball (3+ with sure hands) and then toss it (3+ with pass) over the other team (safe throw) to our ST 4 blodge catcher. This recovery allowed us to then use our guard to position on the field and move down slowly. However, the lightning bolt was used on turn 4. Stun to our ballcarrier - then Prince Moranion took down the diving tackler and Jiger's team recovered and passed the ball downfield. We tried to pressure the ball, but it was well screened - we needed a 2d block against blodge to open a hole and failed. However, then a slim opening was seen...a 3+ 2+ dodge with a gfi to 1d the ball with our wrestle/tackler. Skull was RR'ed to POW and the ball was free. We made a lot of 3+ dodges to get our backup to the ball, but failed the pickup. An enemy blitzer than got pushes and RRed them to a bothdown so we wrestled down his blitzer...running out of options he tried to dodge from DT and failed and the ball was ours. We quickly chained it down field using our catchers and scored on T8 for the 1-0 lead.

Second half both sides were at full strength - but that did not last long. Our apoth was gone on first turn of second half. Then we fouled for a stun, but was ejected. Then we lost another player and yet another on a foul. Quickly reduced in players we took some longshots which failed...then with most of the opposing players gangfouling we had a 3+ 3+ 2+ dodges to gfi twice (had to RR one gfi) to get the 1d on the ball...it was a push, so we pushed into the endzoen to make it 1-1 and leave us 2 turns.

We were down 3 players and lost another on the KO roll. However, it came back to our thrower, who arced a beautiful pass downfield and our blitzer took the ball and 2d blitzed away the screen to race in for the 2-1 win.

We successful defend our XFL title - at least for one more season.

A fun match. The RR'd push on the blitz was key, as it kept me from almost guarenteeing a caged catcher trying to catch the kick. I did break a cardinal rule in the 2nd half, trying to thin Azure's numbers for overtime before overtime was a certainty. My biggest mistake on the pushed TD was not putting a tackler in the hole, instead of using them for assists on the foul. No matter, it was an unexpected run for a team that had played very few matches before the tournament. Gratz on the title defense.
