#6 Chtolh II – Dead (RIP)
#15 Arali III – Pinched Nerve (MNG)
WO VIII quarterfinal

Summary:

In an incredibly lucky match, the Team of the Spider Queen managed to defeat the defending champion and favorite Tiny Steel Hammers. Not only that, but they also end the life of the amazing dwarf runner John Little.

Match report:

The dwarves won the toss and chose to kick. The elves suffer a (BH) hit on pomb legend rarakod, who was instantly apo'd to the bench. Other hitter legend Orzul left the field badly hurt on turn 2, leaving the elves with an AV6 witch as only hitting power. The witch only rolled 1 die skulls but managed not to hurt herself.

It looked like the dwarves would be able to completely shut down the elves' offense at this point, but a string of unlucky blocks by the dwarves (double skull, reroll push, frenzy skull) lead to the elves being able to score on turn 5 after a few turns stall. Since the dwarves had their OT chance after the elven drive, not stalling to turn 8 wasn't a big issue.

The dwarves entered the second drive with only one reroll, which they quickly lost to another double skull. They suffered bad blocks, ran out of rerolls, got nonresults on their pombs, a RIP on a veteran blocker, a crucual KO on mutant superstar Jason Killer, and generally delayed progress. A 2 die push-pro-push-1dieskull left the skink connected to a 3 die from pomber Rarakod, who burned the elves' last reroll to BH the skink (apo). A dwarven 1die skull on turn 7 ruins their last chance at a first half TD, so and the elves can focus on damage, fouling the amazing runner John Little to death.

The second half Jason Killer stayed knocked out, leaving the elves set up 7 defenders against 8 dwarves and a skink. In fear of the wizard, Azure chose to pickup with a blitzer rather than the skink. The elves needed 4 gfis for a 2die on the ball, but snaked the first one, leaving them horrible outpositioned and allowing the dwarves to consolidate and gangfoul Rarakod, to no avail.

With 6 vs 9 and in horrible position by turn 2, I figured I HAD to use the wiz and get lucky, or I'd lose rapidly. The lightning bolt fizzled, and I gave up hope. I couldn't see myself stopping a turn 16 1-1, which would lead to destruction in overtime. As a long shot, I made a 2gfi stab on the skink, whom I KOd.

At this point the dwarves could have moved forward with the ball quite safely, and I would have been very hard-pressed to threaten them at all. However, I suspect Azure was very annoyed at this point, being horribly outlucked and losing his runner, because he decided to have another stab at gangfouling rarakod instead (again to no avail). This let me connect 2 players to the ballcarrier, and position more favorably overall.

After a hit on my assassin and yet another failed foul on Rarakod, there were only 4 elves left, facing 8 dwarves with the ball. Adding to that only of my KOs who might be back for overtime, vs 2 of his, the game still looked very bleak. Warpstone witch had a 1die on the ball, which she rolled, and then she 5+ caught the ball, smack in the middle of Azure's formation. It took Azure 8 dice with tackle to take down the (blockless) witch, who then refused to have her armor broken by pomb. A dwarven pickup fail later, the ST4 witch was running off with the ball, and 2 screeners managed to dodge free from diving tackle. Azure positioned very well, leaving me unable to get a 1die on his diving tackler, so the witch too had to defy diving tackle. She effortlessly made the 4+, only to snake a gfi. At this point the dwarves went for a desperate GFI 5+ passing play, which didn't make it past a failed pickup. The witch managed to once again grab hold of the ball and scamper off, pretty much saving the game singlehandedly.
