The Miners entered their very first tournament, and I tell you what a tournament to enter. The Old World Cup...The Prospectors would be facing some of the finest teams and coaches ever existed.

Their first match of the qualifiers were against some weak fragile elf-folk, the Laurelorn Unicorns. Bardurnon, a.k.a "The Boozer", coach of the Prospectors, went for a first eleven of 9 Longbeards, 1 Runner, and 1 Blitzer to really beat that excrement out of the elves. And the miners did just that. The line of scrimmage was a one-sided slaughter and the dwarves got dragged into the carnage way too much to worry where the ball was.

The first drive started with elves pourring round the sides of the dwarf line cutting off the longbeards from their backfield and so leaving the Dwarf blitzer, Bardur Golddigger to prevent the elf catchers from scoring. Even with his extra stamina training the dwarf blitzer was too slow to catch up to the fast High Elves, and Famelarion scored an easy touchdown.

The miners weren't worried, and knew that now they could beat up the Unicorns with the ball safely held in a big unbreakable huddle of miners. The Dwarves loaded the line of scrimmage with longbeards and were giving the High Elf linemen hell. All was looking good until Dwarf runner, Perequin Flatfeet, couldn't pick up the ball even with surehands and the High Elf catcher, Syraldorn, scored pretty quickly. Maybe the excitement of the tournament made Perequin fumble? Or was it a dirty trick set up by those dastardly Elf-folk? Greased gloves perhaps?

2-0 to the Unicorns and the Prospectors wanted to make sure it stayed that way until half-time. The High Elves though came with a disasterous blitz....and meant that the ball needed to be gathered safely before the High Elves could reach the runner. The longbeards did their work and expected the runner to do his...but Perequin Flatfeet wasn't able to carry out a quick pass to the blitzer, Bardur Golddigger, even with the pass ability. Again the High Elf catchers were able to dart in and get to the touchline. A gallant run and dodge by blitzer Bardur Golddigger managed to knock out Syraldorn before he scored, but Famelarion was there to pick the ball up and finish off his comrade's work.

So it was 3-0 at the end of the half. The Longbeards had seriously injured two High Elf linemen (one with strength 4) and this raised their confidence. They started with the ball this drive and Perequin Flatfeet was able to pick up the ball this time and run into the safety of the dwarf huddle. Slowly moving towards the touchdown line the huddle took most of the second half to slowly shuffle their way down the pitch fending off several High Elf counterattacks. The touchdown was finally scored by Bardur GoldDigger after Perequin Flatfeet was blitzed by an unsuspecting High Elf who managed to squeeze in between the dwarves.

3-1 to the Unicorns, and the High Elves wanted make it 4 but the Dwarves managed to prevent them from doing so and the High Elves weren't quick enough to score before the final whistle blew.

In conclusion, the Prospectors faced some really bad luck when it counted. On two occasions leading directly to two touchdowns for the Unicorns. The game could of been held at 1-1 if the clumsy hands of Perequin Flatfeet could have picked up the ball and thrown it.

Bardurnon, Coach of the Pertinacious Perspectors, spoke after the match:
"Well, we played really well on the line of scrimmage and the Longbeards really showed that experience counts because they were ripping through the opposing High Elves like they were greenskins. The opposing team was weighed heavily on the pass offense, with good quality cathcers and throwers, and that's the hardest type of attack the Prospectors are designed for as they are a team the is built on the unbreakable frontline they have. The Dwarves never expected the High Elves to be able to so easily run around this line. To summarise the dwarf backfield were not good enough to take down the catchers, let alone intercept the inch-perfect High Elf passes."
