Round 3 Box Elder was slated to play the renowned Knights and Wreck Nobility program, led by Legendary Blitzer Ron Swanson. The team started the season paying out a hefty sum to keep Swanson, forcing him to be mostly surrounded by rookies. The season has started rough for the Knights from an attrition standpoint: with their first two rounds being one-sided bloody affairs against Cadaverage and Otter Chaos. Knights and Wreck took the field down players, but fielding a wizard hoping to even the odds against a healthy and resolute Box Elder squad.
The Beards received to start the match with Belli Bonnlinn fielding the ball behind his wall of protectors. Box Elder set to work targeting down the soft bellied retainer line, and the number swing quickly started to work in Box Elder’s favor. Ron worked in tandem with April Ludgate attacking the edges, but watched in concern as his teammates were gradually being stretchered off the field. Ron’s general strategy was to blitz and withdraw, but as the Beard wall mauled their way into the nobility screen he was left as one of the lone free defenders to stop the advance. Arngrimm Addar had spied the legend with his many medals and ribbons adorning his uniform, and saw his moment. Garag Galrum and him nodded to one another knowing the plan, approaching in unison. Garag feinted the attack while Arngrimm hurled his mass into Ron. Ron was blasted from his feet as the Nobility fans held their breath to see him pop up as he had so many times before. This time he stayed down: fractured ribs, a broken wrist and mild internal bleeding. The Knights of Wreck now down Ron, the game became further one-sided. Belli was turned to a frog moments before he crossed the endzone and he made the error in attempting to recover the ball in frog form, but the numbers alone spelled the end of the match regardless.
Knights and Wreck only fielding 7 in the 2nd half made an admirable push in their offensive drive, but were turned back with Belli recovering the ball and counter scoring. Belli would score again on the following drive with the nobility fielding 6 players and unable to prevent the overrun of Beards into their backfield. The Beards would win the match 2-0.
Coach Buck Comments:
I’ve heard the stories of Ron Swanson and as has been the case in most of our games this season, the whole key of the match came down to stopping the legend. Once he lost his support crew and he had to start taking an active roll in screening I knew we could have a chance at pulling away. Overall the guys hit harder than I’ve seen in a while. Arngrimm obviously had a great day. We gave them a shot on the ball, and made that error with the frog pick-up but when you’re up on players like we were, sometimes you get away with stuff. Hoping we can keep this momentum into our next match. Guys played well.
