In the late 1970s, Jim worked briefly with the WWWF and then Georgia Championship Wrestling.

In 1998, Jim was diagnosed with kidney cancer. He gave an impassioned farewell speech on WCW television before his operation, asking fans to pray for him and his family. He eventually beat the disease.
