Jack Hobbs signed for Liverpool from Lincoln City on his 17th birthday.

The youngster had played just three minutes of professional football before Rafa Benitez swooped in August 2005.

On arriving at Anfield, Hobbs said: "What a 17th birthday it is for me to sign for Liverpool, and it goes without saying that I will never forget this one! This is a dream come true for me.

"If someone had told me a year ago I would be a Liverpool player now I wouldn't have believed them. This is unbelievable. I'm still pinching myself and it's a real opportunity for me."

The Reds number 46, who can play centre-back or in midfield, was made captain of the reserves during his first season on Merseyside.

He was also a key part of the FA Youth Cup winning side of 2006, establishing himself as a rock at the back alongside Godwin Antwi.

The tall defender made his competitive debut as a last-minute substitute during a 4-2 Carling Cup win at Reading on September 25, 2007.

The next round provided Hobbs with a first start - and his big day was made even more special because he was marking Reds great Robbie Fowler.

After an assured display during the 2-1 win over Cardiff, he said: "It felt amazing but really surreal. Especially in the second half when I could see the whole of the Kop. That was really special.

"I had a couple of glimpses up there and it was like nothing I've ever experienced.

"To be marking Robbie and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as well - they are two of the biggest names in the game. I really enjoyed it.

"It's quality to be playing against Robbie Fowler at Anfield. Some of the lads still call him God, and it's definitely something I'll never forget."

The night - which saw him partner club legend Jamie Carragher - ended with a broken nose, not that he cared.

Hobbs was once described by Carra as "the nicest guy in the world".
