Hardin always wanted to be a blitzer. "Too slow," they said. "Too clumsy," they said.
Hardin never made it into blitzer school. He followed the well-worn path of the Longbeards and found a place on the list of The Redgum Rabble, and he was happy with that, but he never gave up on his dream.
Hardin fought the odds, and when others left training early he quietly turned his attention to agility drills and core strength training. He kept playing, proving to be a formidable warrior on the Line of Scrimmage or throwing himself into crowds to help his team-mates and unleash heavy blows on his enemies, and though for a long time he seemed to be going nowhere eventually something happened. It all seemed to fall into place and suddenly they weren't saying he was too clumsy anymore. His coach started keeping him back from the LoS and looking for ways to use the special skills Hardin had worked so hard to develop.
When the few fans of The Rabble discuss Hardin today they nod to each other and no longer do they call him clumsy. Eventually the conversation turns and inevitably someone says "too slow," and everyone murmurs agreement into their ales.
"Too slow," they say. But Hardin still stays out on the track when his team-mates have hit the showers. Hardin can often be seen dragging heavy shields behind him, pumping those little legs through the plyometric training that will bring him that much closer to his goal.
Hardin 'Blitzbeard' they are calling him now, and beneath that long beard of his he smiles to hear it.
