| <i><b>THE SPACE ODYSSEY</i></b> Jules van Nern was a famous astronomist in the city of Altdorf. He was a respected member of the elite among the city's intellectuals and was widely regarded as one of the greatest experts in his field - being the author of many books that were used all over the Empire and beyond because of their attention to detail and innovativeness. But one fateful day Nern proclaimed that he would soon begin his greatest project ever - if the not <i>the</i> greatest project in the history of the Empire! Soon the word spread across the land - people laughed when they heard the news and some even said that the dear proffessor had gone mad. That he had lost touch with the ground by staring at the sky for too long. Van Nern soon turned into the laughing stock of the astronomist elite and his books were scrapped as the trust in his sanity deminished day by day. But Jules ignored their laughter and their redicule. He would show them who the real fool was! He gathered his most trusted pupils around him and promised them fame, glory and fortune if only they would follow him - follow him into space itself! He explained once again how he planned to construct a vessel that would be propelled into space through a giant explotion - fuled by a mixture of warpstone and gunpowder - and how they would explore the boundaries of man's understanding of the universe. The most sane of his pupils soon left him but some stayed behind to take part in their masters dream. The project began to take shape and many months after the vessel was finally ready. The last supplies were taken on board as the would-be spacetravellers got ready to go. The last supplies were dragged onto the ship. The crystall ball meant to keep contact with their homeworld was checked one last time before take-off and they were ready to go. A large green cloud was left behind as a huge explotion shook the ground and sent the 'Space Dragon 2505' - as it was named - and it's crew into the black void above them. The crew was thrilled! They reported their succesful departure to the ground through the crystal. But then disaster struck - one of the engines failed and send them of course as it burst. The vessel was impossible to manouver and panic spread as they slowly approached a large, black entity. Nern had never seen anything like it. It was huge - spinning and sucking in everything in it's vicinity and with increasing speed they came closer. The very magic of the crystal ball seemed to be sucked in as the signal to Altdorf seemed to fail. Jules pondered this new phenomenon and the students sent up a final prayor to their patron gods as they got sucked into the big unknown. Only Sigmar knew their fate... ***** |
